i agree with Esk though. i like lyricism and can appreciate good wordplay and wit but keep me entertained i dont want to hear about conspiricies and how the white man is keep you down.

theres way too many quoteables in this

That’s lame. You are entitled to have your own tastes, I agree, but the problem with Kanye and so many other ‘artists’ is that they have one or two memorable lines in a song and all of a sudden people quote them like they just heard the second gospel.

When I talk about lyricism I mean a CHORUS that stands out, not just one or two “dope lines.” Dig?

Kanye just doesn’t have the talent for that. Beats? Yes. Good performer? Sure. Lyricist? No way.

Eminem I feel is an amazing lyricist, really really amazing, but I cannot stand his voice.

Go listen to Thought @ Work by The Roots or even The Seed 2.0 or especially Break You Off. Those have some of the most amazing choruses I’ve ever heard. That’s what I call lyricism.

Best well known lyracists:
Notorious BIG
Q-Tip (tribe called Quest)
Andre from OutKast
Eminem
Nas

…at least in my opinion.

There are more but I am sure many are split when it comes to artists like Jay-Z…you either love 'em or hate 'em.

Yeah, I’ll agree with that list. Add Nelly but only for ‘Country Grammar’ which is classic in my opinion.

I’m just sick of the hyping up of artists. Like when 50 Cent came on the scene and they compared him to Tupac et al. Give me a break. He turned out to be a wash. Tupac had an amazing voice and had plenty of conviction when he sang.

You wanted to believe in the words. But 50 Cent? As we say in my culture, you “still have the smell of breast milk on your breath.” You just arrived. Prove your worth and quit talking shit.

This happens with all genres, though, not just hip hop. It is most prevalent in sports although I honestly think LeBron James is the only athlete in recent times to actually surpass expectations.

Biggie

Talib
Pac
ATCQ
Nas
Method man

Eminem is the best ever lyricist by a mile. The Marshall Mathers LP is 18 tracks of sheer lyrical genius. Others are superior in terms of style, but nobody else can write like that. Biggie is a distant second as a lyricist.
