I just started androgel yesterday. I am 23 and my T was just tested at 260. I am hoping to get results with this product. I had a probelm with getting the prescription filled. My doctor put me on 4 pumps a day of the 1.62% Androgel which is 2 bottles a month. The pharmacy said my insurance would only cover one per month so they made the doctor change the script to 2 pumps a day. Has anyone expreienced problems like this?
IDK what I am supposed to do if the 2 pumps per day isnt sufficient and the doc wants to raise the dose. I will not be able to because my insurance only covers enough for the dose I am on now. This doesn’t make sense especially since I have one of the best health insurance plans you can get. If anyone has experience this before, please give me some input on what you did and how it worked out for you. Thank you.
Your pharmacist should not be dictating to your doctor what amount of drug you need–there is a reason they went to pharmacy school and your doctor went to medical school and has an M.D. attached to the back of his name.
That said, you need to read the stickeys here and post your bloodwork. At 23, you more than likely do not need androgel and there is another problem going on that you should correct.

The problem is my past illicit opiate use and my current prescribed suboxone use. The use of opiates, especially suboxone, severly lowers testosterone. I had to research the topic and bring it to my doctors attention. I told them that based on the symptoms, I am positive that my testosterone is low. So they did bloodwork and it turns out I was right.
This makes no sense to me that a DOCTOR can prescribe me something, and then the pharmacist and the insurance company can just say “no you can’t have that” and just cud my dose in half. MY only other choice is to pay $494 for the second bottle that I need every month.
What are the stickys? The only thing I know about my bloodwork was that he said my Testosterone is at 260 and everything else was good. My T is low because of past opiate use and the suboxone that I am currently perscribed to which is also an opiate. Consistant opiate use slows testosterone production. I had to research the topic myself and then get my doctor to test my blood and put me on the Androgel.
I do not understand how the pharmasist and the insurance company can tell me that I can only have 1 bottle per month when my doctor perscribed 2? The only other option I was given is to pay for the second bottle every month at $494 each. I am currently in the process of fighting with my insurance company to get them to pay for the full amount but its not looking good.
Your doctor may be able to help you with the insurance to write a medical letter of necessity for the medicine. It is worth a shot.
But honestly, I would just go the injection route. Much easier and less of a pain in the ass, and your insurance will cover it probably.
They’re getting that much for Androgel? That’s way, way past highway robbery! Time for some good old black-market American enterprise!
