North America is fucked, IMO, in terms of job security. In Canada your employer can fire you for any reason, barring religious/racial/sexual orientation. Unless you’re unionized or government, of course. A teacher in Canada could take a dump on a student’s desk and would probably receive a paid “time out” and counseling.
It bothers me that someone can put their heart and soul into a career and have their livelihood taken away at the whim of a manager with a single stroke of a pen. I used to be an area manager for a pharmaceutical company…I’d have about 9 reps in my territory at any given time, all outstanding employees.
I’d log into my company email account on a Monday and get a casual note from my manager…“patents are going to run out on two of our drugs. Get rid of 2 of your reps and allot their territories to the other 7”. The guy probably wrote this while leisurely drinking a coffee and eating a toaster strudel. Eventually my career that this company suffered the same fate…I got “bought out” on my birthday.
Anyway, rant over. To the OP, do you have any marketable skills? If not, now would be a great time to take some classes or learn something. Losing your job sucks but keep in mind that this recession/depression is harsh but temporary, and the job market will improve. Keep sending in resumes and something WILL come up.
I was fired from my first teaching job many years ago for being ‘too nice to the students’. Seems treating high school kids like human beings wasn’t a good thing at the school.
Time for you to look into jobs that have a future — nursing, National Guard, things like that. Are you young enough to join one of the services?
I just saw on the News that Wells Fargo had a profitable quarter…I hope that is an indicator that this shit storm will start turning around, it probably won’t though. Good luck OP.

You and MarvelGirl are took my statement the wrong way. What I meant to say is that people are loosing their jobs (i.e. my father) and the job market is terrible so they cant find another job because firms are cutting costs.
Since my fathers lay off, he has been searching for a job, going to countless interviews, but had to register for welfare because he has to pay a mortgage and bills. I personally despise welfare and freeloaders but sometimes it has to be done in a dire situation like this, i.e. needed money for plane ticket to go to out of state interview.
I also meant that this was a temporary thing, not expecting to be on welfare the rest of his life, only for a few months or weeks, hopefully. And its kind of hard to have hope when there are major firms and banks collapsing like a house of cards once a week.

I spent some years in the Security industry, I find that they are the few that profit most.
After all you need people to guard yer shit from the havenots ( of which there are MANY more now).
