I would consider Juan left of center politically, not far left but still left. I don’t have any issue with this, but the bottom line is that what he said is true. Should I board a plane and see a Muslim, I would be certain to keep my eyes on him, if he acts nervous, I would unleash a Felix Legion on his ass.

Read he signed a 2 million dollar deal with Fox today - a nice raise the article added.
Had a laugh over this articles write up on the firing also - cute non PC video included.

NPR had problems with him being on Fox anyway. They were probably looking for a reason to fire him and this was the first and easiest chance they got. You can’t tell me other Americans don’t get nervous when they see a Muslim in traditional dress.
Again that’s the problem with political correctness. We’re not supposed to admit what we’re thinking. In fact, that’s why they call them the thought police, because we’re not even supposed to think such thoughts. Liberals are mentally sick.

Yeah. Juan is a weak voice for the political left. He should fit nicely in with fox.

Would he have been fired if he said he was scared when he got near Tea Party people? What if he said what he did about Christianity because of Timothy McVeigh ? Same outcome ?
Best part of this was when NPR said they regretted this happening during a period of fund raising.

Considering he is FOX news resident, foaming at the mouth, right wing, radical, nut job, I would have to say this is not a surprise. Williams should count himself lucky that he isn’t living in Europe, where he would be in jail for making racist remarks.
Just remember this when NPR is fund raising.
Jaun williams is not right wing at all.
Just in case you didn’t realize it, I was being sarcastic about him being right wing. I watch FOX enough to be quite familiar with his beliefs. I can’t say that I agree with him much but he does seem like decent person. That is why I think it is a real shame for him to be treated in such a terrible fashion.
But he is lucky this isn’t Europe because they don’t have freedom of speech over there. He would be arrested and charged with racism offenses for what he said.
Of course what is silly about the whole affair is muslims in traditional dress aren’t necessarily the ones you need to worry about getting on a plane. It is the ones who are trying to blend in so they don’t attract attention that we really need to look out for.
It’s pretty funny that in Turkey if you go take your Exams in Muslim Garb and refused to leave or change clothes, you will be arrested as a Terrorist. But in the USA if you simply say it makes you feel uncomfortable to see people like that ina place where the greatest amount of violence has been committed by those people…you are considered an illogical ‘racist.’ Hmm…

I fail to see how firing a black man for being RACIST is going off the deep end. I applaud NPR for their strength of conviction. RACISM will not be tolerated, even from blacks.

How was he racist?
Turban heads are people too.
V
True, but Muslim is a religion not a race. So you can call him a biggot, or say he is steriotyping. He should not be fired for saying what he felt. I get a little more observent aroung some muslims now. Look like if a white wearing a red hat, blue shirt, blue jeans, and had a black beard was rumming around killing people. I would be cautius if I ran into some one who fit that description.
im sure he signed in his contract that his employer can fire him for any reason.
nothing new.
Juan Williams was one of the few liberal commentators that I liked, well I guess the good news is he will be on Fox a hell of a lot more?(Wait I thought they only hired right wing nutjobs? Can someone explain this too me, it’s like it is proving everything liberals say about Fox is a lie)
He was not being racist, if I was on a plane and someone was dressed in muslim garb it would make me feel a bit nervous too.

Nah, fair and balanced means having weak liberal voices as well.
I listen to NPR. I don’t think they should have fired him.

Where is the racism? He feels nervous, that is not racism.

He is a reasonable voice. He presents the left wing view point in a better light than Olbermann of Maddcow. Fox should be applauded for putting men like him on as opposed to lunatics that represent the liberal point of view.
A reasonable man presenting a well reasoned argument has a better chance of changing others views than a raving madman.

Not just that, but he said that HE feels nervous, not that EVERYONE should feel nervous…

I’m liberal but I don’t believe in turning “1984” into reality.

it’s like jesse jackson said a few years back. if he’s alone walking down a dark street and here’s a group of guys coming up behind him he’s relieved that those guys are white guys. is he racist too? or is it just a fact that black males are at the top of the list when it comes to committing crime. Then I would be sexist because I get nervous when I see a group of men or a single man walking towards me on a dark street. Or is it just because most rapes are committed by men? I get more nervous when those same men are black so I guess I’m a racist sexist.
What if we re-classify Islam as a political movement?
All problems solved!

Shit, this is America. Everything’s a political movement here.
Michael Barone raised an interesting point (and question).
Clearly, Juan Williams’ affilation with FOX greatly bothered NPR and NPR’s audience.
So, by contrast, how much did Juan Williams’ affiliation with NPR bother FOX and FOX’s audience?
