Man this has been some eye opening stuff, definitely gives me a different perspective on joining a frat.
I’ve never had problems getting into parties but it seems like some of you guys are saying you can’t get into frat parties unless your a freshmen during the rush period or something?

The first thing I’ll say is don’t judge a fraternity at one chapter like it’s another chapter. I grew up a block away from Carnegie Mellon U’s greek row. SAE guys were pretty nice, Pi Kappa Alpha guys were decent enough. Here at Delaware, PKA are thought of as rapist douchebags (mostly because they ARE douchebags, and the 5-6 members accused of rape in a 4 year window…), and SAE gets mixed reviews depending on who you talk to.

Im a freshman at Florida State University and am debating whether or not to join a fraternity. I was wondering who has joined one and what they have to say about it.
My second question about it is how i go about researching and getting info about the fraternity in general. it seems like whenever i go on a website ranking fraternities, the comments are either “OMG they throw the best parties i love the guys in this fraternity” or “there’s more wood in this fraternity than home depot”
Does anyone know where i can get unbiased (or at least less biased than the above two comments) information about the frats here?
I pledged Sigma Chi as a spring pledge in 2007. Best decision I made. I dont know how things are at FSU, but at the UofA and other major universities nearby, pledging a fraternity still carries a large amount of prestige and honor. My pledge brothers are the best friends I will ever have, and I wouldnt trade the past 4 years for anything.
I pledged Sigma Chi at Kettering University in 2008 (i pledged as a sophmore) and I will second it being one of the best decisions I have ever made. DixiesFinest, did u go to BLTW this year?
i personally was never hazed, sigma chi is very anti-hazing. i have actually spoken to our grand consul (president) about hazing personally. i know it occurs at other fraternities, but has never been an issue for me or any other brother i have talked to. the greek community at kettering is appreciated by the university as over 30% of our student body goes greek.

All fraternities are “very anti-hazing” when you talk to the high-ups. The one I pledged was very anti-hazing everywhere except at pledge meetings. Sigma Chi is notorious for their hazing at SC Schools.

Yeah dude soo join a frat and you can suck your stomach in in pictures like this guy…haha

No offense to any of you guys, I don’t know yall personally… but I have never met a guy from a frat that isn’t a complete douche. That’s just my experience.
so true…Ive also never met a guy from a frat that could hold his own without his “brothers” around.
My advice is if this is your first year then try to make some friends on your own first. If you can’t do that then go ahead and join a frat…thats why most of them are there anyways
The pike house here got pretty screwed over and several guys got kicked out of the fraternity for hazing. Apparently, they made a kid get naked, stuck him in a dog kennel, pushed him down the stairs, then pissed/shit on him while he was in the cage and left him there for a few hours.
I think that this whole university fraternity thing is weird. It’s like the obligated thing you have to do to have friends and fun, a good life, etc. Every kid wants to do that, it is supposed to be ‘‘the best years of your life’’ and all that but in the end everyone is deceived. Your life is boring and you are not having any fun and friends in high school? Don’t worry, College is gonna be sooo much different and sooo much fun. Yeah right. The ugly, poor and unhappy people are unable to change anything.

Just because a few individuals had bad experiences doesn’t mean anything. Fraternities have been around for decades, and there are plenty of reasons why. I can understand that some find the experience ridiculous, but just as your experience isn’t the same as everyone elses, every frat isn’t a bunch of d-bags.
Maybe it is different out here or for SAE, but I still stay in contact with most of my brothers, was provided with great job opportunities through alumnus when I was looking for employment, and have a network of business connections throughout the country that is supported and updated by our organization.
The experience is going to be different for everyone, and for most it is going to be what you make of it.
Hahah it’s funny you mention SAE, at our campus they are the biggest group of douchebags, collectively.
It’s almost like we go to the same school stuntman, haha. I had a few good friends that I met freshman year, then they joined SAE and became the hugest douches ever. They axed all their old friends. To each their own, though. I’m a member of Theta Tau, a professional engineering fraternity, and I can say that most of my best friends I met there. I just graduated, and they all remain my good friends.
Just research around before joining one. Each school typically has a different stereotype for the same fraternity. PIKE may be full of rapist rednecks at one school, but a good group of guys at another.
Ahaha whats up dude!
You hear we got ‘deadlift mats’ at the rec center? hahahahah
Join a fraternity where people just don’t give a fuck, and don’t take shit seriously, regarding greek life. Think Animal House, and you can’t go wrong. The easiest way to tell… look around, does everyone look and act the same? If yes, run away, run far away.

You do not, I repeat DO NOT want to join an “animal house” fraternity. I had a friend who did that and regretted it enough that he resigned after becoming a brother. Fraternities that don’t care collectively about their image tend to be full of even more sketchy motherfuckers than normal frats.
I don’t know much about frats since i was never in one. I had no problem meeting people from the classes i was in. Especially when you get into your major and you are basically have the same people in most of your classes.
I am a freshman at the University of Mississippi and I didnt join a frat. The main reason is because they are mostly douchebags that are worried about their fucking hair getting messed up or that they will not be “accepted” by people if they dont wear their checkered red and blue pants to The Grove. I have met a whole lot of people and made some damn good friends without the Greek Life. I dont know how it is at FSU, but joining a frat at Ole Miss just wasnt for me. People are different, so do whatever you want to do!
For most guys, finding the right frat is can be a very good thing for them.
I am a member of the football and rugby frat at school, so we are very fitness oriented and always have healthy whole foods at the house.
The best way to get to know about frats? TALK TO THE GUYS IN THEM. obviously they will all say that their frat is sweet, but you will be able to get to know more of what life is really like
Try to research them at your school a semester before. What you see during rush is not what its like. The best fraternity for you is the one that has a bunch of guys you would fit in with the most regardless of them being in a fraternity or not. If there’s a few you like check out how they are nationally, it has potential to open a lot of doors for you in the future for the larger ones. It seems like most of the comments against fraternities here are from people who never joined one which should tell you something.
And to anyone who says don’t do it because they are all douchebags, for all you know this thread starter is one and will fit right in.
