I know the economy is bad, and I don’t want to sound like your parents, but save as much as you can and also invest if you can. I wish I saved my money and invest when I started working when I was 18… I would be a millionare by now… Oh well. You live and learn.

Lol, I wish. I try to hold myself to 4 slices a week, which seems to keep the damage in check. Now, if I were working in a steakhouse and they had the same “free food” policy, that would be something…

Stay away from the food industry unless it’s your last resort. If you’re simply looking for extra money for a short period of time, go with something easy. When I’m home during the summer, I work as a summer camp councellor for the Boys and Girls Club in my hometown. I only make $7.00 an hour, but the work is easy and I actually look forward to going to work everyday. There are always before and after school programs for kids going on. As long as you like kids and have a fair amount of patience, it’s simple.

Nope, you didn’t miss anything. Except maybe the fact that I am “natural” student, hated my home life and did anything I could to get away from it. I went to school from 8am-2:30pm, drove about an hour, started work around 4pm, worked 4pm-2am, drove home, slept from 3:30am to 6:45am, got up and ready for school and did it all over again. I did that for about 4 months until I dropped out of high school (the work had nothing to do with it, it was for a very different reason) and then I worked the GM position from about noon-2am. That was even more enjoyable since I had moved out of my folk’s place and got to go shopping for the daily specials at Oujimaya (sp?), the gi-normous Asian fresh food market in downtown Seattle. It was very cool watching the chefs pick out live fish, squid and other critters and picking up on bits and pieces of what they were saying about how to prepare them.

The dropping out of HS is one of the few things I truly regret in life. But a chain of events were put in motion by that action and I’d not have my beautiful boy had I not dropped out. So it’s all good.

Even though I was working a lot of hours, and dropped out the last quarter of my senior year my cumulative GPA was 3.98. The beauty of that situation is that the administration hated me (I was their meal-ticket to fame since Georgetown and a handful of other “prestigious” schools were courting me) and I fucked it up by dropping out. The HS administration wanted me to have to come grovelling back for a diploma but they were forced to graduate me inabsentia (had they withdrawn me versus allowing me to rack a full quarter of F’s, I could not have graduated, but my GPA wouldn’t have suffered from the F’s either). And not just graduate me, but to do so as saluditorian! he he heeee FUCK THEM! Their damn plan backfired. Sure, I didn’t get my full ride but I’ve not done half bad for myself anyway, all things considered.

Do you like the water and are you good with your hands. If so become a commercial diver. The pay is great. You can easily earn upwards of $65K/yr. if you are willing to travel. The training costs about $4K for a 6mo. class and the school will place you. I made a ton of money doing this when I was 18 (20yrs/ago) travelled the world, became wordly. Then I went to college. I had the education paid for, money in my pocket and a lot of great sea stories to tell to the hot chicks I met. It’s not fun like Scuba Diving. It’s more like being an underwater welder or mechanic but you make a lot more. Good Luck.

Stay away from assembly line man. Warehouse/factory does pay a fair amount more then restaurant/ grocery store type places though. The workload is also much higher and most of the guys you will work with will be assholes. I worked in for a transport company when i was 19 and i had to get out cause most of these guys seemed like they just got out of jail.

Military, man. I just signed up @ 25 years old. I wish I had done it when I was 18 yrs. old.

And remember what Jack said…make sure you see it in writing…the laiason (sp?) screwed me a little. My recruiter is cool and told me what I had to do to get where I wanted…now I guess it’s up to me to make sure I get it done.

Think about it…you are 18 years old sign up for three years get $30K for college. Retire from the military after 20 years and you will be < 40 yrs. old. You will still have 50 years to do what you want and get a retirement check from the government while you are doing it.

When I just graduated high school I moved and got a job at a gym desperate for personal trainers. I was lucky because everyone else I had been working with had a 4 year degree or higher. After being introduced to T-mag, it revolutionized my thinking, and enabled me to get through some clients making $35 an hour plus hourly pay. The best parts were that I showed up late everyday while never getting reprimanded, leave early, and workout on the clock. It doesn’t seem like work either because my friends stop by for me to torture them on a daily basis. I’ve had this job for 2.5 years now, and I am going to try to stick with this through grad school.

If you can, try to find a gym someplace to set up shop. You’ll no doubt be an knowledgeable trainer because you’re reading t-mag.

Have you looked into FedEx or UPS? I worked as a “package handler” at FexEx Ground for a little over a year, and was able to keep my job at K-Mart at the same time. 6-8 in the morning and 5-7 on some nights. $9-hr. In bigger cities I’m sure they have just evening shifts open. Just something to consider.
