Thats some impressive and probably painful squatting, great way to end the cycle.
Great job jjk. Can’t wait to see your new max.
that smolov stuff looks painful. I’m really interested in what it does to your max…
Thanks guys, for stopping in. DCA, I really don’t have a good feel for where I think my max is right now. I am probably going to try for A 10 lbs. PR (435) and then see if I have anything left. I think my lower back and hamstrings are my week points and I have been GMing the weight a bit lately, this may hold back a max attempt a bit. I would really, really like to break 450, but we will see.
Good luck. Git 'er done.
Nice job getting safely through the cycle JK. Enjoy the deload, there is no doubt you are stronger for all the effort.
Jack, I think 435# will go “easy”. You would have had it last time. If you increment well, and don’t run out of gas, I think 450# is definitely on the radar.
Can’t wait to hear!
If you’re doing 4 sets of 405 x 3 I think your max is going to be above 435.
I x4 the notion of getting a good P.R. at least a 450.
What you need is a good partner/spotter to help guide you - not the clowns you had so far- come on out to Chicago I’ll help.
Serious.
Man, thank goodness. My hips were getting really tired from reading about all this crazy squatting. ![]()
You should’ve arranged for the Oly kid to spot you, just thinking about what he can do will be the best “spot” you can have…only half-kidding.
Seriously, you would’ve had 435 last time. Not to be master of the obvious, but I think your choice of progression will be key to the max you actually put on the books. Perhaps a consultation with Mr. Meat in that regard?

Shit, I would sure like to take you up on this. I think both confidence and loading strategies play a big factor in hitting PRs, even more so with squats than any other lift.
Thanks for the vote of confidence guys, I appreciate it. LS and Harry, I am pretty confident about 435, but I am still not sure about the loading strategy. I figure I’ll get one–and only one–shot above 435, so I don’t want to blow it.
With recovery and the fact that you can do 405x3 for 4 sets when beat to hell, I’m betting your max is closer to 500 than you might think.
You’re going to hit 435 and think “Shit, that was LIGHT!”
Betcha.
Great work on the squatting Jack.
Since you haven’t squatted before with the weights you plan to attempt I think it might be confidence boosting if you went up in moderate chunks. Since you’ve done 405 for 3 for multiple sets you’ve got to feel that 425 would be easy. Why not do that. When that weight flies up it will be no big deal to add another 20 pounds, 445. I’ll bet that will feel tougher but with what you’ve been squatting I think you’ll still have plenty in the tank. If you feel good go for 465, just another 20 pounds. It wouldn’t even surprise me if you did 465 and went for 1 more set above that.
Don’t limit your thinking to just 1 set over 435.
You can do it Jack. With the volume and intensity of training you’ve done your body is ready for some big numbers.
Go get em!
Boy, thanks DCA and S_L. That is really some food for thought.
S_L, are you going to the USAPL state meet? If so, good luck! I have a conflict, but I would like to hit a full power meet sometime in June/July.
Nice squating Jack. You’re hitting some big weights.
Thanks for stopping in, Steve, I appreciate it.
Bench and Press Test Day:
Bench
45 x 30, 90 x20, 135 x 15, 185 x 5, 225 x3, 275 x 1, 300 x 1 (PR + 5 lbs.), 315 x 1? (PR + 20 Lbs.?).
Press
45 x 10, 90 x 5, 135 x 3, 205 x 1 (PR +5 Lbs.)
Notes: Woo Hoo! I finally broke 300 Lbs. today! I felt Like I could have got 300 for a double, so I loaded up 315 and gave it a go. Video shows the spotter touching the bar, but he swears he did not help. I did not feel help, but, shit, whatya gonna do. I don’t really have my pick of spotters. I will leave it up to the court of public opinion whether it counts. At any rate, I am pretty confident that 315 will be mine for certain soon, because it just didn’t feel all that heavy. Also, I was pretty happy with 205 on the press, after two pretty big-for-me benches. Now, I need to secure a 500 dead to hit 200, 300, 400, 500 (Press, Bench, Squat, and Dead). Videos to follow shortly.
Side notes: I lost my belt–I can’t find the damn thing anywhere. I almost didn’t bench today because I like having it for tightness on a heavy-for-me bench and press. This is really gonna piss me off if I don’t find it soon, I want to test squats in the next few days and I don’t feel comfortable squatting heavy without it. And f-me, do I ever look fat benching without the belt. Fischer, Help!
More side notes: Took the Wa Professional Responsibility Test today, which seemed pretty easy, except for the massive cramp in my hand from trying to write legibly with a pen. Damn, I am out of writing-with-a-pen shape for sure. Won’t get the results for two months, but at least its out of the way. A good thing happened, however, as I got a good lead on some contract work that I can do until I get licensed here shooting the shit during a break. We’ll see if it pans out.
