JJack- I have always found that dips and BW stuff return very quickly after a few sessions regardless of the lay-off. Great stuff.
Big Number today. Crush that weight Jack.

Thanks OG! Rick, I was thinking about your post on the way to the gym.
Smolov Base Mesocycle Test:
45 x 10, 90 x10, 135 x8, 185 x 5, 225 x2, 275 x 1, 315 x1, 365 x 1
Nice work over here, JJ!
I’m pretty happy with the results, and finally getting that 405 monkey off my back. 425 didn’t feel all that different from 405, so I decided to go for broke, and got crushed at 455. I pitched forward and that was that. That’s ok, though, as a 70 Lbs. pr is a little much to expect. I am still up in the air about whether to run the “intense cycle” or try something else.

It looks like you got it once your spotter stepped in. Nice work buddy.
You’ve got at least 3 months before you can start carving on water. No need to cut down the added weight gain just yet. :>)
Awesome, Jack! Simply awesome! Congratz on the big PR… 435#, maybe even 445# would have gone.
Cowboy Up! Man the move out west has been good to you! Nice freakin PR Jack!
425 looked so easy for you that it’s hard to believe it was a 40 lb PR! That’s an insane amount of weight and PR-age, right there.
Congratulations jjk.
I think you would have gotten 435. But hey, I’ll do anything but Smolov to put 10% on my Squat in a month. The 4 X 9 days just scare the heck out of me!
You didn’t miss 455 by much. Bet 440 would have gone up for sure.
Awesome PR, Jack.
great job jack! 455 would’ve gone if you hadn’t already been fatigued.
Wow - That’s about 100lbs you’ve added to your squat since you started this log in late June. I’d celebrate, but that’s just how I roll.
Very inspiring.
Thanks everyone, for stopping in and the support. I appreciate it. I am not sure how much more I had in me, but 455 was definitely more than I could handle. It was crushing once my form broke. There was a split second there where I thought it might go, then bam–it felt like someone dropped a piano on me.
Frankly, I was a little spooked by it. The guy behind me was a trainer at the gym I grabbed and I think that holding me up might have been the biggest workout he has had in a while. When I asked for a spot, his comment was, “holy fuck that’s alot of weight!” I am really feeling that miss right now in my quads, hips, ass and back.
Oldman, shit, I just re-read my first post, and you are right. That 335 was a tested max–probably not legal depth–in May of last year. I am a little sorry I didn’t try 335 now and make it an even 100 lbs. Oh well, I would have been kicking myself for not trying more if I had done that and made it. But that is the nature of PLing, I guess.
Okay, Jack, what’s the verdict? Was it the working with heavier loads? The 4 days a week? The high volume? Was it a combination of any two? Or was it the whole program?
Impart your wisdom!
Good work, great results from the hard training and effort at the table.
Thanks, Pete, I appreciate it.
LS, I am still trying to get my head around it. I am relatively new at this and the only thing I have to compare the program to is 5-3-1, and the approach is totally different. I am certain, however, that the loading structure and schedule is well thought out and at the same time it is devious. I felt really beat up and almost sick most of the time out of the gym, and I felt like shit between sets, but every time I got under the bar I felt stronger and more confident. The sick part is, I actually enjoyed it. But this would be a tough hobby to have if I had to feel that way year round.
