We’ve been taking it in the ass from the Saudis for a long time. They snub their noses at all things American–behind closed doors.

If you’re educated and have skills, you should be given if not be eligible for visa to contribute to the domestic economy. Bring over all the Iranian doctors and scientists and engineers so the mullahs won’t have enough talent to work on military stuff. Brain drain.

It’s not like those countries are the best places to live, either, given the fragile economy and high unemployment. The best talent want to all leave and go broad. I say we let them.
You cannot interfere in a whole region’s economic, military and political structure for nigh on 100 years and not expect repurcussions

I know many Iranians, some of whom live in Europe, some in Iran. They - hate - Britain for its role in overthrowing Mossadeq, nearly 50 years ago. Egyptians remember Suez; Palestinians remember the Balfour declaration. And though Britain’s interefence pro causa oil is utterly shameful it dwindles beneath the interference of the Americans. Chickens coming home to roost.

You sniveling little punk, another 19 year old wonder boy. It wasn’t your country that was attacked. How dare you make excuses for those cowards.

Everything he said is correct Zeb, get over it.
I adamantly disagree.
I absolutely agree with Zeb.

Any people that has been fucked with by another people has the absolute moral authority to take the fight to the enemy.

That is the principle you are defending, right Zeb?

That’s okay Matty when you learn more American history you will eventually agree with me. As for the definition of empire it matters not where you look the US is obviously NOT an empire, not by an sane man’s definition.
See, I took your advice and went to school and got me some edumucation so lets us see where the word empire comes from.

I comes from the Roman word imperium which is the area that were under Romes influence, i.e. where their commands carried weight, because imperium comes from impero = I command.

They did not have not necessarily have to pay taxes, or join their wars, but follow Romes orders if needed.

So tell me, where on this planet is Washingtons voice not heard?

Does Latin America not fight the war on drugs to their own detriment?

Does the US not control the IMF and the WTO?

Does the US not control the NATO?

Does the US navy not rule the seas?

Who on this planet does not listen when Washington commands them to do anything. They do not necessarily always obey, but neither did Romes client states.

And that is what would I probably say, if the idea that a nation that spends AS MUCH FUCKING MONEY ON THE MILITARY AS THE REST OF THE PLANET COMBINED is not an empire was not laughably absurd on its face.

Justin,

What in God’s name is with that avitar?

That’s in such poor taste, I’m literally hesitant to look at it.

I’m guessing you have a “point,” but really, WTF are you thinking?
I’ll assume you are referring to me, but my name isn’t Justin.

It’s Steven Seagal shooting kids. What’s not to like?

Saudi national planned to bomb locations in California, Colorado, and Texas. Yay multi-culturalism. Oh, and he overstayed his student Visa (attention Janet Incompetano).
Motherfuckers like these are seriously making life hard for people like me. I plan on visiting the US again, hopefully to go trekking in some lovely outdoors in colorado, and wyoming and utah … but because I look like him and come from similar neck of the woods, I’ll get all jumpy and shit the next time I visit the US lest the locals view me with an extra helping of suspicion.

Of course, motherfuckers like these also make life hell for the people who have to worry about being blown up.

Hi ZEB!

Made no excuses. I’m not quite sure where you gleaned that one!

My country however has been attacked by IRA terrorists funded in part by American money (not governmental before someone makes an issue of it) by terrorists lauded by Clinton. This is how the USA treats one of its staunchest allies.

I’m merely pointing out the American foreign policy tactic (and indeed much of Western Europe) habit of interfering with another countries’ problems to get hands on their commodities (viz: Afghanistan Talibans wined and dined by Texans, Egypt, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Chile, Indonesia, Vietnam) will inevitably come to bite you on the backside

It did for the Roman Empire. It did for the British Empire. It will for the American Empire.

Now call me young and juvenile or whatever facile thing you want. You can do that all day long and ignore the realities of your empire. I’m not saying the Russians/Chinese/martians will be better. I’m pointing out empires do horrible things and always have. The US is no different. That will provoke reactions whether it’s the Mau-Mau, barbarians at the gate or whatever.

But hey I don’t know why I bother responding to you you’ll just insult me anyway
I agree.

I’m trying to find the poll done in Afghanistan about how many had heard of the 9/11 bombings. It was extraordinarily low.

Basically, for most afghanis the situation looked like this: one day they wake up to go work in their fields, and there’s a fucking US army base.
People, please don’t read into my comments anymore than this. The situation is fucked. There are truly sincere people on both sides of the ocean, and complete dicks on both sides too.

But one thing we can’t do is to forget that there are a shit load of young afghans whose only understanding of their political landscape is that some americans are bombing their lands. They don’t have the news coverage required to make an informed decision. They’ll grow up fucking angry, and they’ll want to retaliate. This doesn’t automatically make them terrorist dicks hell bent on destruction.

Sure, those guys exist too, but to label them ALL terrorists as if they were born terrorists, is as fucking dumb as someone labelling all jews as money-grubbing bitches, or far right christians labelling all gays as sexual fuckups.

Ahhhhhhh I don’t know, I don’t know what to think. Just a very, very bleak and scary situation for everyone involved.

What about the sheep herders in an afghan village who get blown up by an airstrike. Does the sole survivor pissed off kid have ‘the absolute moral authority’ to take that fight to the enemy? ie does he have the right to catch a flight over here and start curing our ills?

PS. Just putting it out there. I know what you’re getting at, and I agree in some parts. I’m just trying to highlight the difficult nature of all of this, and the fact that once the fighting has begun, no one can really take the moral authority. Its a ‘me or you’ scenario, with angry or hurt people on both sides, and what happens, happens.

Again, too complex a problem to form a definite opinion on (certainly for me)

I am aure if said goatherder knew that Saudi Arabians that planned and trained in Hamburg and Florida among other places blew up a few buildings in America he wouild totally make the informed decision that the death of his whole family was, to quote ALbright, “worth it”.

Ha! Even for you that’s a grossly inaccurate simplification.

But I guess it at least provides an interesting counterpoint to your “other” position that the EU can pretty much do whatever it wants, without having to bow to US pressures and interests.
So could the Parthians and the German tribes, which hardly changed that the Romans indeed had an empire.
