It may sound like a sci-fi vision, but Japan’s space agency is dead serious: by 2030 it wants to collect solar power in space and zap it down to Earth, using laser beams or microwaves.
The government has just picked a group of companies and a team of researchers tasked with turning the ambitious, multi-billion-dollar dream of unlimited clean energy into reality in coming decades.
With few energy resources of its own and heavily reliant on oil imports, Japan has long been a leader in solar and other renewable energies and this year set ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets.
But Japan’s boldest plan to date is the Space Solar Power System (SSPS), in which arrays of photovoltaic dishes several square kilometres (square miles) in size would hover in geostationary orbit outside the Earth’s atmosphere.
He says they have the “goal” to produce electricity at 8c KW/hr. That would be nice, maybe they figured out how to reduce launch costs to $10/lb. Perhaps if they flapped their arms hard enough they could carry a payload to orbit that cheap.
This isn’t a new idea, but the thing that always kills it is it’s just not cost effective compared to other sources of energy. When you have to pay $10,000/lb. to low-Earth-orbit, it just isn’t going to be financially viable. The key technology is a low-cost way to orbit, when you get that, it can become more do-able and lot of other Buck Rogers stuff becomes possible.

What do you mean by this statement? What’s wrong with “climate change fags”? Do you really believe we aren’t affecting the climate?
we may not be affecting it as much as some like to have s think, or maybe its more. we just have no idea. we do know that every day has a different weather pattern though

I don’t see how anyone can think we’re NOT affecting it, simple common sense should suffice. But maybe it’s more obvious to me because I basically took a semester about the ways we derive energy to power our society and how it affects everything.
By the way, I’m no hippie, I hate hippies, but as far as continuing mankind’s progression, the energy and water problem are things we should start solving soon.
