James Stumbles Through Powerlifting

Thanks GV. It’s handy to film from that angle because I can see what I’m doing wrong and try to correct it.

Great video. Strong pulls. I had a stomach bug recently and couldn’t drink any coffee. Got that same headache you described.

Great pulling, those looked easy. I drink coffee all damn day, more power to ya if you can cut it out.

Cheers guys. Yeah, I drink coffee all day too and am at the point where it doesn’t even act as a stimulant anymore. It’s harder kicking caffeine than it was quitting smoking.

Hell with that, I’m drinking my 2 cups of dark black coffee every day for life. I have a triple tablespoon of Folgers instant every morning and before I lift. On non-lifting days I have the triple after awaking and a 1 table spooner in the afternoon. I like me coffee black and strong…gosh I better not say that in a crowd.

I’m the same way on my coffee. The trouble is that I no longer get anything out of drinking coffee. People talk about the buzz or about how it gives them a jolt but it does nothing at all for me anymore.

DB Press: 2
1585
Pendlay rows: 5

Good session. Brought some green tea into the gym and I didn’t get a headache like yesterday.

All bench sets were pauses. My goal on curls is to get to 100 and I try to beat the previous days set.

Good work James.

I have the same issue with drinking Coke as you do with coffee, it no longer has any stimulative effect on me. The good news regarding the withdrawals at least in my case is that they go away very quickly, When I cut out all soda a couple of weeks prior to the meet I may have a headache on the first day but after that I am fine.

Kiefer has a good article on caffeine/coffee and creatine on dangerously hardcore. Its a good read and talks about the other benefits of coffee and caffeine that still exist even if the stimulating effect is reduced with repetitive use.

Great work in here.

Great pause work on the squats. I encourage you to keep pushing the weight up on the front squats without wraps or a belt. Nice job.

Sun training

Deads: worked up to 1485, 495, 505 all beltless
Front squats: 6
135, 155, 175, 185, 205
RDLs: 36315
Abs

The cube called for 515 but I was working beltless and wasn’t sure I could make such a jump from 495.
Front squats went well and I am making slow progress on these.

Mon bench
Bench: 6185, 205, 225, 245. 2275 52205
JM Press: 665, 85, 105, 125
DB Press: 90
15, 10
Pendlay rows: 26554
Front and side raises
Curls
Abs

Had to work out on Mon night as I was in class all day Sat and it sucked. Gym was packed. Would have been a good day for heavy deads though.

It was supposed to be “explosive” day but I don’t get a ton out of working explosively so I went a bit free form. I need to rethink what I do on this day going forward

Great deadlift. Your back stayed perfectly straight throughout. Textbook.

Do you get anything out of rolling the bar away and back towards you at the start? I see a lot of people doing that now.

Great pull.

Weds training: squat reps
Squats: 6305, 315, 345
Front squats: 6
135, 155, 185, 205. 4225
Deficit deads: 315
3*6
Abs
Lots of mobility work

The cube called for 2 at 345 but I wanted to see what I could get. Got 6 and probably could have gotten 2 more but they would have been on the ugly side. These were all beltless and with only sleeves. Very happy with these reps. Front squats are moving up too and I got 4 for 225 and it was 50/50 for the 5th so didn’t chance it. Kept the deficits at the 70% range since I pulled heavy a couple of days ago.

I’ve been doing a lot of mobility work and it’s really helping me. A few weeks ago I couldn’t comfortably get into the squat position as seen on the very first episode of Mobilitywod and now I can stay there for at least a couple of minutes. I think that goblet squats have really helped me with that. I’m also doing conditioning work with the KB two or three days a week.

Thanks GV I’m going to take that advice on not using wraps or a belt for as long as possible.
