While Western politicians are at pains to describe “terrorists” as a separate, abstract entity that has “nothing to do with Islam”, radical islamists are simply putting salafi ideology into practice literally word-for-word.

It was a little weird for me as an American to attend an English university and go to the “Oriental” literature section of the library to find it was mostly Middle Eastern and some from India while I was looking for Chinese and Japanese literature. And yes, I was a little surprised that the library used such an un-PC word as “Oriental.”
I feel this thread isn’t quite on topic. I agree that Islamic terrorism won’t go away in my lifetime, which is one reason why I feel it should be treated as a crime instead of an act of war. Our legal systems are simply better designed to deal with terrorists acting within our borders than the military is. The policing tactics involved aren’t so very different from dealing with unusually violent drug gangs. And I think the drug cartels and terrorists groups are caused by dysfunctions in our world; different dysfunctions, but really the best cure for both is to make the world a better place to live in general.
Sort of like how I haven’t been sick enough to need a doctor in twenty years because I take care of my body.
Another thing I don’t understand about the war on terror is why civilians aren’t expected to be brave. I think civilians should have the courage of our democratic convictions and not sacrifice our civil liberties. There are so many other things that are far more likely to kill us, yet we accept the dangers.
I agree that Islamic terrorism won’t go away however it can certainly be reduced.

While not as direct as you, I do think we need to stop trying to tap dance around the rain drops. We know what the problem is and we know where it comes from and who the people are committed to terrorism. It does nobody any favors to be politically correct about this.
This is why Brexit happened. The Brit’s are fed up. The French are fed up. The Germans… well the Germans are in a sticky position, considering the last time they held a harsh view of a demographic. Europe is fed up.

Yes unfortunately that’s the world we live in. 23% of the worlds population follow this book that says to kill infidels 109 times throughout. Thankfully 1.6 billion people don’t follow these teachings exactly.
What would it take?
Well considering we are fighting an ideology that we cannot change ourselves and they won’t change themselves, it would take war and lots of it. We would have to not only root out the active cells but gut the sources. Being that they are spread out through friend and foe alike, the magnitude would be stunning. I am thinking Crusade level violence would really be the task at hand.
These jihads require one thing to keep them moving, victories. Even the tiniest victory reinforces the belief in jihad. You have to hand them defeat and spectacular defeat at that, make them feel as if God has abandoned them completely…
I think it can be done, it’s are we willing to bleed and spill the blood? I think most people are to a point, but beyond that point it gets murky. It will be hard to tell who the good guys are in the trenches of that fight.
Most people are willing to let others bleed for the cause, not necessarily themselves. When you ask them to personally sacrifice and risk their lives the problem doesn’t matter nearly as much.
Imo nobody should ever suggest war style violence unless they themselves are willing to join the fray (in no way applying that to you at all, just a thought).
I agree. I think you understood that I was encapsulating the actual magnitude of the struggle, not making a recommendation. Who knows what is to come as it may come out, in the end to be an epic battle the likes of which the world has never seen. After all, this is not new, this started in the 8th century. It’s our reaching out throughout time engaged in the same struggle that has been going on between East and West, Muslim and Non-Muslim for the last 1200 years.
I think we have to realize that we haven’t really risen that far since that time. We are not really better people then we were back then.
In the end we are going to collectively commit to peace or commit to war, I don’t think fence sitting will be an option as violence continues, grows and re-manifests itself in infinite waves.
I can say this tactic of small attacks, with low casualties is a good tactic to employ if you are a jihadist. You accomplish your goal and yet you don’t do anything quite bad enough to draw huge armies to bring ruin to your land. You terrorize people but you don’t kill enough to draw an assault. That’s where Bin Laden messed up. He made a big splash, but the cost was huge. These smaller attacks are death by a thousand cuts. And they can do this endlessly, kill a few here, kill a few there, just don’t kill 3000 in one shot and the armies stay home…
They are incredibly efficient. Steal a car or truck-> speed through crowd and hit as many as possible.
Their casualty count is phenomenal compared to the cost of conventional war.
I think for starters their ability to recruit and indoctrine people through the internet should be completely taken away.

Every account linked to them gets deleted. They post videos to platforms then it gets spread that way. Remove their platform in the first place.
I agree. It’s a complicated issue and a good balance has to be found.
I think we need people like Chuck Shumer on the front lines trying to figure this terrorism mess out. If he can’t do it alone then he should recruit Nancy Pelosi and Barbara Boxer to help him. I honestly think between the three of them we will have this entire terrorism issue taken care of in short order.
I think we should make them ambassadors of the U.S. in Iran and Saudi Arabia… I guess that would be a little too mean.
I am all for cyber-warfare. But more than removing their accounts we have to be hostile… Drown them in porn and malware.
Yep and they can keep it up indefinitely. Who is going to stop them? If the jihadist is will to die, I don’t think we will ever hit the wall. That wall where we say ‘That’s it, that’s the last one!’
Big attack mobilize armies. Small attacks mobilize the police and that’s about it. The potential is infinite.
