is professional wrestling real?

Did you by any chance take a few shots to the head? Perhaps from a concrete floor at high speed? No reason, just wondering…

I’ve always wondered how it is decided who is going to win the wrestling match. Do wrestlers have any say in that or it is all fixed by WWE owners?

box offfice recepits (money),crowd response, promoters, and politics determine who wins.

I’ve been to two live raw shows and one ppv (royal rumble)in the last two years. The overall show was a blast but, watching the actual matches was not that great compared to the old NWA shows I saw in the 80s. The reason I think is back then the wrestling match was the whole focus. Since they wern’t tapeing a tv show the arena lights were turned off except for right over the ring and if you had a decent seat could really enjoy the match. There was no pyrotechnics, big screen or even entrance music (except for the free birds). but man I saw some great matches. A young Ric Flair,Sting, the road warriors etc. I do not watch the WWE much anymore. I respect these wrestlers abilities but over all it’s starting to get stale.

“It’s predetermined, but wrestling is not fake.” Huh? What am I missing here? A sporting event that is predetermined is not fake? I realize that bodies fall on the ring floor and that is real, but when heads snap back when the fist missed by a foot, you’re telling me that is real?

What you are missing is that pro wrestling is a show, not a sporting event.

It’s just as fake as Siegfeld and Roy and just as gay. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. (Don’t bash me Monkeyboy)

It is a show, eh? So it’s fake.

Why is it called wrestling? That’s my problem. Garbage cans, steel chairs, cutting yourself in the forehead, etc. Real amateur wrestling is an athletic competition. Why do they cut themselves in the same spot? It’s always on the forehead. No busted lips, broken noses(normally)–just cut foreheads.

Professional wrestling is as real as any stunt scene in a movie. Sure the stunt men are falling, punching and the like but they are working together. Think of it as dancing with a significantly high risk of injury.
Make no mistake that most pro wrestlers are athletic as hell, but they are not participating in a sport but a theatrical production.

Yes it’s fake! There I said it. I don’t think anyone here has said that these guys are really fighting. Just trying to point out that even though the matches are pre detirmined as to the outcome,it’s still rough as hell and the average person could never make it through one of these “fake” matches. As far as being gay,the UFC fights look pretty sexual when the fighters are in the guard/mount positions. I would not call a BJJ fighter gay though. BTW I have been a wrestling fan since Jerry Lawler was a rookie back in Memphis. I’ve known it was a show for almost that long. It was still a secret back then.
