apparently, you missed my wall of text and should be congratulated for avoiding it so perfectly . . . .
I don’t understand what Greece over 3000 years ago has to do with what this thread is about.
Otherwise good post. I guess.
LIfti - the point about the foundations of Democracy in Greece is to demonstrate the difference in terminology. A true Democracy (demo-kratia) is a Greek concept and has to be understood in the terms and characteristics of that definition as outlined above.
Socialists (political not economic) have long hidden under the guise of a democracy when in fact they are a omni-ocracy. The rule of all is not democracy, it is mob rule. Because mob rule leads to anarchy, Socialists must actually resort to oligarchy (rule by few - elite) while maintaining the false facade of “democracy” touting the vote as proof of their democratic ideals. For example, Kim Jong Il Wins every election in NK - great democratic participation there.
My point is that calling it a democracy doesn’t make it so - you have to compare it with a true democracy and see how clsoe it actually measures up. We’ve allowed descriptions of government type sot lapse into all sorts of vaguery and mis-matched definitions - its time to actually understand what we are dealing with and to call a spade a spade
