You have all the information yet to still aren’t willing to acknowledge the corporate greed that existed and still exists in the system. Risk meant nothing to the banks that were holding these toxic assets because they were able to re package them and make them look more attractive. You’re also not mentioning the role of private insurers. The regulation was happy news for all the lenders and investment banks. Hell some of them may have knew what was coming but they still got involved, they just underestimated the magnitude.
I also don’t like your pessimistic perspective of where we are now. Credit lines have been and are loosening up. Wall Street is incredible smart, not only are the firms making profits but they’re also repaying their bailout money. If theres one thing wall street is good at its creating wealth.
I know theres this debate of whether the US government should have bailed out the massive corporations that they did but I think it had a good impact on the stock market. It gave the markets that tad bit of confidence. The downfall of some of these corporations would have created a panic attack and we all know how markets react to panic…
You are ignoring one huge glaring problem with your optimism . . . debt load
The problem is astronomical because governments owe more than they can possibly repay, some like Greece have debt loads that are 100% of their GDP - think about that - if Greece stopped all expenditures and confiscated all of the porduction of their nation for an entire year (no Greek gets anythin - no food, no energy, no medical care, nothing) - only then could they actually pay off their debt.
Here in the US we are at 90% of GDP ($13,000,000,000,000.00)and our unfunded liabilities (entitlement programs) are in excess of $108,000,000,000,000.00 - let’s put that in terms of our GDP - we would have to confiscate our entire GDP for 9 years to cover just this current debt load - 9 years of no food, no energy, no medical care no travel, no warm/cool, no shopping - nothing for 9 years!

But I am obviously exaggerating the problems . . . .
Let’s put this in even starker terms - if we sold every US asset - our national total would only amount to $72 trillion - against our national liabilities of $121 trillion . . . but what am I worried about . . .

I’m also not sure how exclusively religious mono-cultures are being used as examples of Anarchy…Seems to be more of a theorcratic island within a nation-state. A nation state whose existence provides rough seas and rocky coast for pirates and invaders looking for plunder.
But it is voluntary. And that is what makes it anarchic.
Sure there are social pressures within the community to tow the line and remain a member but those social pressures exist in every culture – otherwise why do we call it the status quo?

Well that’s because if “democracy is failing” then “something” might end up taking its place.
Why should it not enter the discussion.
Besides, anarchy is much more interesting to talk about than some arbitrary political doctrine.

Thank you for being a voice of reason and fact in this obsurd discussion. You are a shining example of a truely educated person. Something that the vast majority of people in this country should shoot for. People like you are too few and far between.

Why do you assume I haven’t done any reading on “libertarianism”? Merely because I ask those prmoting it to defend it here on the forum? If you or anyone else thinks anarchy works, why can’t you defend it when asked?

I assumed you had not read any of the material based off comments you have made in the past.
And anarchy (or extremely limited government) has been defended here before by handful of people. I can’t recall how many times the conversation has come up in recent years. Brother Chris actually did a solid job, IMHO, of defending it here. But like I said, it’s doubtful anyone here is going to make you change your mind anymore than you could convince me that democracy “works”. I could make the argument fairly easily that democracy has failed.
Do you recall where you read that? I ask only because that goes against everything I have ever read of his. I don’t know, maybe you have read more him than I have?

I agree. I have not ready any of the proclamations made by Thunder about Rothbard and I have read him pretty extensively. It sounds like he is taking out of context the criticisms Rothbard makes about statist society.
If one follows the nonaggression principle to its ultimate and logical conclusion Rothbard comes across pretty easily understood. The harder part is theorizing a world that deals with aggression in a voluntary manner – but again, with a good imagination it isn’t hard to agree with the possibility of living in a relatively nonaggressive society, sans state.

But there again I would disagree that democracy (as a principle and a generalized form of government) is not failing. What is failing is democracies pursuing socialist agendas via huge entitlement programs
My claim is that democracy must result in socialism.
Democracy is essentially the socialization of government.

Hmmm . . . you and I need to have a long discussion about the origins of democracy then. You have the socialized version of democracy too firmly entrenched in your thinking. True Democracy had NOTHING akin to socialism and leads away from it rather than towards it. How familiar are you with the original democracies of Greece?

It does not matter about the ancient definition of democracy; what matters is that the definition of modern day democracy is such that everyone believes they have a right (a positive right that must be granted by “the people” them selves) to participate in governmental policy – either directly or indirectly. That is socialism. This concept did not exist in ancient Greece – this isn’t ancient Greece. As an historian you should try and understand how this happened…ironically, it was the liberty movement itself that did it.
Our understanding of concepts must continually be revised based on present realities.
never mind then . . .

Same thing for the state, I can hope in my truck and drive it away so they cannot find it. I can hide my cattle in the hill side so they cannot take it. I do not see the state having any more powers than any other private institute except having a monopoly on it.
That’s right - they have a monopoly on it, which means they have the option of force and the ability to impede on other contracts. If the state decides you owe money or recognizes an applied lien, the state can prevent you from giving the frozen assets to someone else. Your collections agency cannot.
I see, I have not ran into that thankfully, but I see where it could happen.
Well, I guess if I am in fear of him doing this I could get insurance. Farmers buy insurance on their crops, I suppose there would be someone willing to take the risk for a premium.
On the other side, I could require that he have insurance so when there is a non-payment, I put the lien on his property, and if he says fuck off after the arbitrator (and the insurance agreed on all the details) that the insurance would pay me the payment their that policy covered. I am not sure, it could go many different ways, the market would come up with the best ways to deal with these instances.
You keep running into the same problem - you keep wanting to contract the problem away with no one to enforce any of the contracts you come up with. So you get someone to insure this (and I would be quite skeptical of such an arrangement) and it occurs - well, you’re back in the same boat: how do you get someone to enforce the insurance contract if the inusrance company says “buzz off”.
If there is one thing an insurance company doesn’t want to do, it’s pay claims. They fight like hell even with a fully developed legal system commanding the performance of contracts. With no enforcement mechanism, why in the world would you think an insurance company would just pay up on a claim just to be cooperative?
Again, you haven’t thought this through.
So, with all due respect, what you’re saying is you don’t have a good answer.
Problem for you is, the trial and error has already occurred over millenia - and people have decided the best mechanism to serve these needs is a state.
“Repo men” need authority to “repo” - and you still haven’t stated where that authority comes from. Hell, you don’t need a repo man - in many places, you can self-reposses - that isn’t the point. You need authority.
You don’t have it. You just simply assume that people will enter into contracts and cooperate like crazy. Newsflash: people don’t do that now, even with a ton of authority protecting the viability of contracts.
It is a fatal assumption, and takes us back to square one: anarchy presumes some completely irrational behavior on the part of humans to succeed. At every turn, anarchy is thwarted.
pretty sure all the anarchists will get their wish in the not too distant future.
I’ve been wondering at that. From companies, to courts, to arbitrators. Is there another level after this, and yet another after that one? Where’s the final answer? I guess I’m asking who has the monopoly on “the final say.” How is this monopoly enforced?

When there was the kerfuffle over Ron Paul’s newsletters in 2008, some journalists did some digging to see who was the “true author” (in addition to or instead of Paul). In the 1990s, Murray Rothbard teamed with libertarian troglodyte Lew Rockwell for the Rockwell-Rothbard Report, and in 1992, Rothbard wrote “Right-Wing Populism: A Strategy for the Paleo Movement” in which advocated unleashing cops to mete out “instant punishment”.
Rothbard, Rockwell and Paul were part of a “paleolibertarian” movement that wanted to purge libertarianism of its left-tilting social libertines and did so by appealing to “rednecks” and working-class race-mongers. Rothbard’s article was pushing that narrative, and exploiting racism in the process.
I think Reason magazine covered this quite a bit, and some other libertarian-oriented magazines did as well (the New Individualist, I think).
