Intra-Workout Drink Increasing Hunger?

Hi everyone, it’s been a long time since I posted on here, but after trawling through the internet I couldn’t find any decent info on this.

After watching Chris Jones’s Eating to Grow series (highly recommend), I started drinking sugary, isotonic drinks (in the UK - so not Gatorade) intra-workout in an effort to put on more weight, quicker. Since doing so, I’ve found my hunger has been massively increased throughout the day.

Has anyone experienced this? Or able to give an explanation as to why?

The type of carbs you consume peri workout matters IMO. As well as post nutrition. Thus I don’t use simple sugars for peri workout as I workout first thing in the morning and simple sugars do seem to cause notably increased hunger throughout the day.

I workout around mid-morning and for me it’s been a positive, as I now have an appetite for more carbs.

On a normal day I’ll have oatmeal 60-90 minutes before hitting the gym, followed by 2 bananas, scoop of whey, lots of coffee, peanut butter and creatine blended and consumed 30 minutes before the workout.

I realise that the consumption of simple sugars (a high GI food) will cause a drop in blood glucose levels and cause me to have an increased appetite afterwards. That seemed like an obvious one I should have worked out myself. Well at least it’s beneficial for bulking.

This is one of the main reasons I ditched the periworkout liquid carbs.

I work out in the morning, and when I light up my brain’s reward circuits with carb drinks, it sets me up for a big battle against cravings all day.

I have found Plazma pre and HBCD + aminos intra with MAG-10 post has minimal if any increased hunger/cravings for me later on in the day, so, take that for what it’s worth.

Interesting.

Do you still have carbs after working out in the morning?

Anyone can elaborate more about the brains rewards circuits? I usually IF, and I was wondering if having a sweet sugar free gum in my fasting phase would interfere with my ability to resist cravings??

Yep, I usually get about 100-150g of carbs in the first four hours or so after my morning workout.
