That is until you need it. Ever won the lottery simply because you needed it.

I know a few people that are waiters by choice just to avoid child support garnishments.

That’s what I thought. But the cost of fixing bodily injury far exceeds the cost what most folks can reasonably self insure. One December night during a nor’easter I was driving along a seawall along the Atlantic ocean with my kids. A fierce cold wind is blowing rain and the tops of waves across the road. The next thing I see is a yellow rain slicker tumbling across the hood of my car. Inside the slicker is a 13 year old girl. She ran into the road in front of me. She had a broken pelvis.

Her parents sued. My insurance company answered the suit and funded the defense through discovery, depositions, experts, a week long trial and a jury verdict in my favor. The attorney appointed by my insurance company said it was a good thing that I had plenty of insurance (I had $300,000 in primary coverage and a million dollar umbrella policy) because they didn’t have to settle. They tried. The plaintiffs wouldn’t budge. So they took the risk of trial. It was their call. It was all their money at risk.

I hate to imagine how deep in the hole I would have gone funding my own defense. Too much to self insure.
