First, I specifically said “in a high-audience TV show”. Have you forgotten how many millions of gullible people actually watch that program? Now compare that to how many people hear Churchill’s ramblings…
Second, don’t even compare the flak he got for that with the one Bill O’Reilly is (or is not) getting, especially considering the size and gullibility of the respective audiences.

Im pretty sure O’Reilly said those comments on the radio but thats neither here nor there…I get your point. However, what does his audience being gullible (thats a slight over generalization by the way) have to do with anything? Do you think they heard his comments and went, “gee, that there O"reilly’s right, I hope those terrorist blow up San Francisco!”
I argue that Ward Churchill is in a far more influential position than O’reilly when it comes to shapping the way people think (i.e. Indian genocide by small pox). I still doubt, very much, that any of O’Reilly’s listeners really believe he wants San Francisco to burn…
Again, as I wrote in response to Prof X, Churchill said some pretty inflammatory things about people who actually died in an event that completely changed this country…of course he got more flak.
My only real point is that your assumption about the reaction to conservative assholes being less strong than it is to liberal douche bags is baseless and only speaks to your biases. Keep in mind, everything in this country is pretty much divided 50/50 so if O’Reilly’s comments dont garner as much outrage as a Churchill’s, maybe, just maybe, O’Relly’s comments just didnt offend as many people.
I really dont think that if a liberal had said something similar about texas, the reaction would be any more pronounced.

-Come on, you know that the legions of conservatives that follow the likes of O’Reilly or Limbaugh, and the like, listen to and take very seriously their opinions and platforms.
Can you really compare this kind of influence with a college professor who does a few speaking gigs? You’re comparing millions to thousands.

-Sad but true, his comments probably didn’t offend as many people. They certainly didn’t seem to offend his fans. To say that the country is split 50/50 is a serious distortion of the truth. While they may be split evenly between political parties, most don’t agree with, or probably even know, Churhill’s stance on anything.
He’s just a soundbite from a year ago, insignificant today. O’reilly on the other hand has millions of viewers, every day. If they didn’t agree they probably wouldn’t be watching.
I agree with O’Reilly. I like the guy. He says what he means and means what he says. Thats rare these days and he has the balls to do it.
You know what? Screw San Fran if they dont want military recruiters in schools and such. Let em burn. They turn their back on the military and the rest of the country, then the military should turn their back on San Fran. Its about time people took the consequences of their actions. Hell, let all of California slide into the damn Pacific for all I care.
And what O’Reilly said in NO WAY effected national security, so its not even close to walking the line of the 1st. amend.

I assume you are for bringing back the draft for the military? I seriously hope you have served in the military considering that point of view.

Actually, I’d rather think that somebody that has actually served in the military would be incapable of spitting that stuff out. But maybe I’m beeing overly optimistic… You tell me.

Apparently, at least one did. The laws of sampling tell me that inevitably there are many more.

-Are you reading this LBRTRN?
-Hollywood couldn’t script something to better prove my point from the previous post.
However, I wish that those with the balls to enlist were free to accomplish their missions.
If 10,000 guys signed up hoping to eradicate terrorism, I wish they would be trained and then turned loose to do just that without any P.C. constraints. I would put 10,000 pissed off Americans (without any restraints) against any terrorist organization in the world.
So I am not understanding how you can make “hyperbole” about the deaths of Americans who don’t agree with you…but God Forbid you relate American actions to a known political figure we were at war with? Where is the line drawn in this country? Who makes that line?
Well you beat me to the Churchill reference. I have to say Prof, you have completely proved your bias. Churchill did not simply “relate American actions to a known political figure.” His exact quote is, " If there was a better, more effective, or in fact any other way of visiting some penalty befitting their participation upon the little Eichmanns inhabiting the sterile sanctuary of the twin towers, I’d really be interested in hearing about it." Give me a break…
[/quote]
Perhaps it was hyperbole? Like in making in making a point.
Or does that only work when you’re one the good guys. Wearing a white hat. Which means you can get away with anything?

But, what does the rest of the moron population think?

Where did I say only the good guys can use hyperbole? Where did I say O’Reilly was a “good guy?” And where did I say Churchill wasnt using hyperbole?
My point was that Prof. X’s characterization of what Churchill said was inaccurate and considering he (Churchill) was referring to the actual deaths of 2,000+ people it was far more offensive than O’Reilly’s comments. However, as far as I am concerned, Churchill had every right to say what he said…as does O’Reilly.

This is impossible…for I am never inaccurate.
I really don’t see either as being more offensive than the other. It sure doesn’t seem there is as much outrage for O’Reilly showing his ass on tv. Hell, at least one person on this forum agrees with him.
The country is divided, pretty much, along party lines with an equal amount (give or take) of staunch Republicans on one side, staunch Dems on the other, and a group of moderate Rep & Dems in the middle.
This fact, in my opinion, is proof that the reaction to Churchill’s comments was not one based on politics (with conservtives simply trying to nail a Leftist in that instance while ignoring a conservative in this instance)…Ward Churchill’s comments, however small his audience is, were simply more offensive than O’Reilly’s.
People, in great numbers, from both sides of the political divide, found Churchill’s comments to be very offensive, and that is why his comments produced a bigger backlash.

Lol…ya, I cant believe there are people who 1)take him literally, and 2)literally agree with him!
