This is the right attitude, unfortunately America as a whole does not believe this and would rather be idealistic in that the world needs peace, and if we just apphease, and understand the enemy plight, the threats will go away. This is a huge mistake and it only emboldens our enemies. We, as a society in the USA are so diverse, we are going to have a very hard time coming up with any sort of unifed program for society to operate and survive. We see the huge problems in CA, AZ etc. England, France, Spain…these pots are not melting…they are filling with elements like oil and water…who do not assymilate as a single society. This is a dangerous recepie.
I can totally understand the Jewish position. It’s the same mentality I wish the USA had. We had it for about 1-2 years in 2001-2002… then we forget and change/conceal the truth of the threat to us in the world.

In 2010, Israel will spend about 6.3% of expected gross domestic product on defense, making it the country with the biggest ratio of defense spending to GDP and as a percentage of the budget of all developed countries. This is down considerably from the high in the 1980s of 24%.
In 2010, the USA will spend 4.7% of its GDP in the Department of Defense.

Canada or Quebec is getting threatened? Why would I give a shit how good my country is supposed to be. Why would I care if I am part of the new empire of china or anything as long as I am not bothered by any idiots with a gun (or sheperd is what they call themselves I think)

Because there is a difference between the way the Chinese government treats its people and the way the Canadian government treats its people.
You enjoy a much greater level of freedom living under Canadian rule. Whether that freedom is worth fighting over is up to you.

the section on military budget and US spending says
“This calculation does not take into account some other defense-related non-DOD spending, such as Veterans Affairs, Homeland Security, and interest paid on debt incurred in past wars, which has increased even as a percentage of the national GDP.”

Very well said. Thousands of years of solving our problems using violence has built the capacity for violence in us. Evolution can be one mean bitch.

Prehistoric and primitive societies were characterized by almost constant warfare. War was a common cause of death in these societies. It may have played out as a much more “low intensity” type of warfare, but it accounted for more dead (as a percentage of the population) than even the most brutal “modern” wars (WW I and WW II).

I think what needs to be asked is why someone would fight for his country. If war is something that profits to a small group of elite then why would I participate in it. Why would I fight anyone that is not directly threatening me.
If a war breaks out don’t expect me pointing a gun on anyone but on the guy that is threatening me, the guy who wants to forcefully recruit my in his army or the guy from another army who has been told to shot me.

THEY will take your women for helpmeat. They will kill your men-children. You will toil in their fields under yoke and lash.

I don’t know if this is sarcastics but that is a really insane way of thinking. At this very moment the volcano under yellowstone could explode, we could receive a flash of short-length wave from a star, there could be an nuclear accident, you could get hit by a truck… anything. There is NO security in life and it is stupid to obsess about it and try to protect yourself from anything. This kind of thinking make me want to lock my door, buy a gun, go to the grocery store to buy some hostess cakes (give almost all the tax money to the military), fry them and then eat them miserably at night alone in front of a tv.

…then why do we do it, a lot?
The vast majority of people say they hate war but yet we have something like 4400 recorded wars in human history. Doesn’t that seem rather odd to you guys?
This is really not a troll thread, just trying to get an understanding of why people secretly love war. Its like watching lemmings run into the sea – if the lemmings could talk, wouldn’t you like to ask why they do that?
I’m not implying anyone here is a lemming, btw, or anything negative about anyone.
(Maybe Angry Chicken will join in the discussion. That would be fun.)[/quote]
Some of us do hate war. If I could, with the wave of my hand, eliminate violence from the world forever, you better believe I would. I feel war should not be our first option and that if it has to happen, it should be as quick and efficient has humanly possible. War is evil, however, it is a necessary evil. We have to defend ourselves. If we are threatened, or attacked, we need to strike back to minimize loss.
If I’m out walking around, I don’t want to get into a fight. I will try to avoid it. Talk my way out, etc. But if there’s no way out, I am going to fight and I’m going to win. I view war the same way.
That’s just my two cents. Other people will feel different or have different thoughts, but hey, that’s life.

I want to add also that my statement doesn’t imply doing stupid, irrationnal or dangerous stuff.
