Because of my job I only get about 1-2 weekends off in the fall/early winter.
I always schedule one of them during the rifle season. When it rolls around I will be leaving either late Thursday night or early Friday morning and hopefully won’t be home until Sunday night!
The zone I hunt in only allows for 1 tag per hunter this year, but since I find being out in the woods for a weekend so therapeutic, I may just stay the whole weekend even if I get one on the first day.
Just got a brad new Savage .308 this year, can’t wait to try her out…
Are you in Michigan?

Minnesota actually. Are they switching to hunter’s choice in MI as well?
I wasn’t sure if the tagging change in my zone this year was because of the droughtlike conditions all summer or if our zone had just been overhunted last season.
Not hunters choice but they are limiting antlerless permits in the north. I just asked because our season opens on the 15th and you talked of different zones.
Speaking of drought we have been hit with Epizootic hemorrhagic disease that is carried by midges that have been prolific breeders due to the excessively dry season.
That sucks. Around here the “Earn a buck” rule is steadily spreading. Basically despite a combined 3 months of hunting season (7 months if you include urban archery) red neck boys spot lighting and running dogs, and the wiley coyotes showing up everywhere, the deer population is so large that they are moving to require hunters to harvest a doe before they can legally kill a buck. Farmers can legally spot light on their own land year round and I hear that some are killing deer by the dozen and tossing the bodies in the woods to rot, which is a sin.
I’ve been out twice, haven’t seen anything. It’s been too warm most days, and the awesome orchard I got permission to hunt this year isn’t so awesome as it was a bad year for apples and they’re all gone already. Still plenty of fresh signs so I’m going out next time I can get a morning off.

That’s really a shame. I haven’t heard anything about EHD in MN, but I know that they were discovering some cases in southern WI. I’m not sure how well midges will spread as it starts to get colder, but hopefully if it does come to MN from WI it will be in the south (I hunt up north).
Also, is your opener the 15th this month or next month? We open November 3rd, but I won’t be able to hunt until the weekend of the 10th. I’m getting antsy!
I hunt in the northern half of the lower peninsula, although there are many more deer in the south. I might try to get out down here, it is just hard to escape the crowds on public land. The Bow opener was oct 1st, gun is nov 15th and blackpowder is dec 1st.

Are you over by Gaylord or more toward Alpena?
Our family deer camp was outside of Mio in Lazerne, never did as well there as I did hunting on our own property in the thumb.

I have 18 acres west of Cadillac over by Tippy Dam if you know the area.
I know the lazerne area pretty well, spent a lot of time in Lewiston, Atlanta and Mio. The Northeast corner of the lower has had a lot of issues with Bovine TB the last few years although I think they have it pretty well contained. For a while you could pretty much shoot as many as you wanted there.

You are right, that was rude. Is that your sons first deer? It’s an awesome feeling getting your first buck.

That’s got to be so cool for a kid his age. I wish I had started that young.
Last season we took my gf’s younger brother out for his first non-youth season (he’s currently 12). Kid put a round through a running buck’s heart from about 200 yards. Pretty cool for him.

HUGZ!
My 17 year old had never been before. Unfortunately he hit it in the spine. The deer crumpled to the ground and my friend punctured his lung with a knife, but it was still 5 minutes of bleating.
12 year old had been twice before. Didn’t see anything the first time and he shot high the 2nd time, so he was pretty happy.

LOL Yeah it’s more paleo that way. No I slice into medallions and cook them.

Ahh…got it…yeah…the roast went in the oven for 10 minutes at 425…then 20 minutes at 325…wasn’t ‘bad’, but just doesn’t compare to a big beef roast…the 4 medallions on the plate were cooked separately in a frying pan. Dredged them in salt, pepper and fennel pollen.
I saw 2 bull elk yesterday. Of course I only have a cow tag. Had 4-5 bulls bugling to from about 50 yds of our camp this morning until about 0500. One of the coolest things I have ever heard.
