There has to be some part of your campus that remains open in the summer. I would suggest sleeping in the 24 hour type lounges on campus.
I’ve slept on campus a few times when I was too tired to walk home late at night.

There aren’t really any buildings that are open 24 hours, other than dorms. I guess I could try to sleep in a dorm common room somewhere, but that’s probably frowned upon.

I tried the Walmart parking and they would wake me up and ask what I was doing there. Then again I was in a really nice neighborhood where cops like to bust your balls for just about anything…
A few more suggestions.
Food:
I bought a lot of fruit and kept it in a little ice chest, and the packages of tuna (not cans). packages are easier to deal with and much more convenient, tho a little more expensive. Bottled non name brand water and like you said peanut butter, bread, rice cakes, big package of spinach, spam, edamame, almonds, and vegetables.
Washing clothes: Wear as little as possible unless necessary. While living in my car I was found in a wifebeater about 90% of the time. The less you wear the less you wash. The only time I went to the laundry mat is when I had to wash my socks/underwear and wifebeaters. If you have black or gray socks wear them as much as possible. By not wearing white socks and wearing black wifebeaters you can wash all your colors in one load, instead of separating whites from darks.
I also agree with the motel idea once every couple weeks or even asking a friend if you can sleep on their couch while at work one day (< what I did). Sleeping in your car really does deprive you of a good REM type sleep. Also keep some sort of blunt object in your car. I once woke up to a homeless guy looking in thru my window, Scare the living crap outta me, but I always kept a knife on me.
Make sure you have a good cell phone car charger as well and any electronic gadgets that you can’t live without, make sure you buy a car charger for them
Internet:
Go to any WIFI hot spot like bookstores and mooch off their internet. Or just go to any outlet and let your laptop charge then drive around residential areas and find anyone with an open internet connection.[/quote]
99% of my clothes are darks, so I can check that off the list. There’s no shortage of wifi either. I’m kinda worried about my protein intake, it’s going to take a good bit of tuna. I could always supplement it with those BK double cheeseburgers, not sure how healthy that is in the long run though.

If you’re working out and have a clean diet and it’s only temporary I wouldn’t worry about cholesterol or any problems eating a double cheeseburger. Also some Avocados are good as well. Good amount of calories, good fat.
Dude, if you’re living out of you car, your protein intake and bodybuilding goals are the least of your worries. Get your shit together, man.
Priorities:
A place to live > high protein intake

definitely. You can fix any consequences of a bad diet in the long run, keep your well being in general more important.
Definitely get some blankets and stuff because even in survival situations they say never sleep in your car because it holds no heat at all. You can keep a weapon but make sure its legal…cops as others have said will come and check you out several times and you dont want to be in trouble.
A possible bed set up
I just thought if you can find an appropriate sized piece of plywood and rig it up to lay to across the backseat (some blocks or something in the leg area to keep it propped up steady then you could significantly improve your ability to sleep comfortably. you will be able to stretch out diagonally and not get your back twisted up from the seats. I would definitely give it a try. You could easily get the materials at home depo for 30 bucks or so and have them cut everything for you (they have big industrial tools specifically for that. Maybe barrow a hammer from a friend.Lowes will do the same.
One more thing is keep your car windows down alot to let your car air out, you dont want it to reek of B.O or you will always smell.
Good luck man, I hope you can get the finances together to get back into an apartment or stay with a friend.
how old are you? are there YMCAs that could do some sort of youth shelter gimmick? why dont you become an RA over the summer? my school had a few for the foreign kids that didnt go home between semesters
Protein intake is the least of his concerns, but there’s no reason why he shouldn’t take it into consideration when deciding which groceries to buy. He’s living in his car, doesn’t mean everything he’s worked for goes on the back burner. When I was in my car I realized my situation sucked but tried not to let it derail all my plans and goals. It’s easy to get upset or feel like your life is going no where when living in your car, by keeping goals and still following plans you give yourself a sense of purpose and it also helps motivate you to get out of your situation.

I completely disagree. Everything needs to go on the backburner and everything he does should revolve around getting a place to live. I’d cancel my gym membership, save the $20/month along with a hefty grocery bill because of all the extra calories I burn in the gym.
This guy will be officially HOMELESS. He’s a BUM. The ONLY thing he needs to worry about is getting a place to live.

that would be one kick ass summer!
Meh, I’ve been living in a van for the past 6 months. I did it because I like traveling. Now I have a contract in Austin, and I’m still living in my van. It’s easy. If you want details, let me know.

Thats cuz you’re a dumb dumb and a loser. You’ll never amount to anything just like your father!!!
(Shiny nickel for anyone who knows where that line comes from)
Isn’t it from “Holy Mac 4: The Lost Tape of Planet Fitness - For Real This Time”?
^Fail!

I don’t pay for gym membership, I have free access with my student ID. And I’m not to the point where my grocery bills are astronomical. It would only be a temporary situation, and I intend to make the best of it.

I can’t begin to imagine the hijinks.
I know a guy that did this way up north. It was hella cold and he would wake up to his cup of water being frozen. He had a gym membership and used the showers there. He also had a local P.O. box so he could continue living in the area of his 2 and even 3 jobs at one point. He would meet women in the local bars and had about 2 or 3 women on his plate at a time spending a night with each of them and the rest of them alone in the car. Some weeks it was mostly living in a car and not their beds. Eventually he got enough money to purchase a small house with plenty of land. If I recall correctly, some times he’d pull into a gas station for the night.
As far as food goes, why don’t you just go down to your local social services department and apply for food stamps?
Just tell them that you’re homeless and without money for food.Just type in what state or city you’re in along with ‘food stamps’ in Google and it should point you in the right direction.
I don’t know about where you live, but here in CA, homeless ppl can pick up their mail at the welfare office as well.
Sounds like you’re in a shitty situation at the moment, but it also sounds like its just a temporary setback, which you can surely bounce back from.
My advice…utilize whatever public assistance may be available to you and take whatever work you can find.
Having a car in itself means you’re not truly homeless. You have a semi-private enclosed space to sleep at night. Maybe trade your car in for a van or truck w/shell?
Why is a residence on a fixed plot of land the most important thing in the world? Why can’t a car be ‘home’? If I were to live in a car, I’d put the one of the backseats down, put some sort of mat to flatten it out, and sleep with my feet in the trunk. Keep all my stuff next to me or in the front seat.
- Wal-Mart’s policy is to let trucks/RV’s stay overnight. If you go to the corner where they are, you can sleep in a car overnight as well.
- 24HR Wal-Marts have bathrooms 24 hours a day
- Gym has a shower. Use it 2x per day.
- Rotisserie chickens from Sams’ club (or Wally, grocery store, etc) are an amazing deal. Other cheap prepared food is shrimp, cottage cheese, yogurt, and eggs if you don’t mind them raw
- Many parks have grills for people to use
- The library is your friend (or college, if you’re there)
- It’s summer, so you don’t have to worry about freezing
- If it gets hot and bugs, get some screen door material and cut it to fit your car windows
I was in a similar situation when I graduated from high school here are four options
Good Luck !
