The push for cars with better mpg was about saving the planet, not feeding the black hole of government spending. When a revenue shortfall happens, which is every year here, the govt can simply raise the per mile fee to make up the loss. We already pay for the roads with the gas tax, and we have the 2nd highest in the nation. So 48 other states are doing it cheaper than we are.

If you think I am wrong, come down to Figueroa and Hill, where a jaywalking ticket is $250.

Since raising taxes is nearly impossible due to public outcry, the government just makes up the difference with $600 red light camera tickets and $75 expired meter tickets.

The city and state is dirt broke, how else do you think they plan to pay off several hundred billions of dollars of debt ? You think they will go for one huge tax grab ? Course not, it’s a slow bloodletting, a little here, a little there.
