What about the bodybuilders from the past? Have any of them had problems now as they’ve aged?
as I type this there is currently numerous tribes of people living in Siberia whose diet consists only of protein and fat…absolutely no fucking carbohydrates…this too much protein nonsense in a crock of shit. you could survive just fine if you never ate carbohydrates for the next sixty years. it’s more likely that a bodybuilder would have kidney problems from all the drugs taken than from large amounts of protein.
When you think about it, we’re built to consume mostly meat and animal fat (and bit of vegetables and fruits). Carbohydrates (coming from grains) if consumed in large quantity is far more damaging to your health than proteins. Don’t sweat too much over how much is too much protein. Worry about controlling your carbohydrate intake! Most of us can’t even consume anything more than 1.25-1.5g per pound of bodyweight on any given days without protein powders. All these lectures is making me want to go back to college and finish my nutrition degree!
You are truly lucky to have that teacher! Lol, i remember my dark day when i presented a paper over protein intake and how protein powder helps gain lean muscle, i got shot down by nutrition professor in front of class! She said that RDA was enough to build new muscles?!? That’s why i’m not a big fan of politically corrected american dietitic association (ADA). I truly think that the food pyramid was based on political BS to help certain businesses like grains. They are light years behind today’s studies. EVEN Price A Weston knew these stuff 50 years ago! Read his stuff on nutrition. Amazing…
this is from john berardi’s post workout puzzle part II
ou may be asking yourself why too much protein could be counterproductive. Well, a very high protein meal can actually cause a release of glucagon. Glucagon is a hormone that antagonizes insulin release. So if you eat some protein with carbs, insulin shoots up. If you eat too much protein with carbs, the insulin release may actually be lower. And if this weren’t bad enough, glucagon also has another function that we want to avoid. The darn stuff causes the body to convert amino acids into glucose (a process called gluconeogenesis). So take in too much protein and say goodbye to that special amino acid ratio. Instead those aminos become carbs!
go read John Berardi’s articles. He is a lot smarter then we are in this area.
i know that when im bulking, and have 300-400 grams of protein a day )600 gs of carbs), my kidneys tend to really hurt like i have been hit with a baseball bat in each kidney. I urinate just fine, but am forced to cut down on my protein and drink tons and tons of water and cranberry juice. Otherwise this pain doesnt decrease. My doc told me i had to cut down especially on my higher concentrated sources of protein.
