How Important is Highschool?

I get depressed about bad grades. I really do. It affects me to the point where I can’t sleep, eat, nor train. I think this is due to the fact that I grew up with two older siblings (10 year difference) with a 3.5-3.8 GPA and my brother being valedictorian. My parents have accepted that success as the norm.

So how important is highschool in determining a persons worth to society?
Is it a fair judge of one’s intellect?
Is it a good predictor of success in the future?

Are you still feeling the after-effects of your highschool education now?

damn i wish i could answer these questions for you.

None of those questions really mean anything, a better question would be, what do you want to hear?

well you need at least a GED to get to college. and id say college is definitely worth it. even if its just a community college.

but to answer your questions, id say

no
no
no

no.

I just want to hear educated opinions or experiences of how highschool or equivalent gradelevels affects/ed them in their life.

High school grades really don’t matter much.

IMO, if you want to get into a good college then your grades are important. And why give a half-assed attempt at it in the first place?

I found in high school, many people who aren’t that smart but manage to get good grades simply work hard at it. You don’t have to be very smart to get good grades, just don’t be lazy and pay attention. Those same people that worked hard (in my experience) ended up college drop outs by their second year - why, I cannot tell you for sure; maybe they got lazy. But it’s not a definite indicator of intellect.

But to be honest, my high school marks mean pretty much nothing to my employers now that I work - my experience in my field is much more valuable. I work with guys that have completed degrees (I have not) in England and I can still write, spell & add better than most of them (this is relating to some other guys I work with).

Thankfully im in no risk of not graduating.

Instead of feeling sorry for yourself, do what you can to improve your grades. Study more, ask the teachers for any assistance they can provide, whatever you have to do. With that being said, high school isn’t just about learning stuff in class. It’s also about learning to interact with your peers in a more mature way. Make sure to do extra cirricular activities, where you and other students are working together to achieve a common goal, whether it’s a school play, sports team, or some class project.

This is how my transcript looks like at the moment-

School president
A very colorful letter of recomendation.
Class president grade 9-11
12 weeks work experience during summer doing accounting/marketing tasks
A modeling portfolio for 4 adverts

But my GPA sucks balls. …2.3-2.6

The grades are only important to get you into a good university/college after you graduate. Grades are also indicative of a solid work ethic, which is the most important aspect to anything you want to do in life. To answer your questions, I would say that high school is a somewhat good indicator (albeit indirectly) to a persons “worth to society” and “predictor of success” since if you can’t work hard at something easy like high school, what’s magically going to change to make you work hard at things much more difficult?

I think some people get more out of it than others. Unfortunately, if your grades aren’t coming as naturally for you as for your siblings you might be one of those that use more of it not less. That is, if you have an interest in ever going to college.

But…that said, I never graduated from high school. I faked it/picked it up through college and came out with a math/comp sci degree with only grade ten math. Based on that I’d say you don’t necessarily need it, but it makes it a bit harder and I hated lying about not having it because you never know what people think about it.

YMMV.

What maters when getting into college are your SAT/ACT scores.

You seem to work hard with that many extra curriculars on your resume, do you simply not enjoy your classes and thus find it difficult to learn the content? I know classes that I don’t enjoy are usually at least 10% lower than the ones I like.

as long as you graduate hs, you;ll be fine, though having very good grades in college make getting a good job a LOT easier

That’s really an opinion.

If you graduate highschool and do nothing with your life, your probably not ranked very highly on the totem pole.

If you graduate highschool and have a great idea (i.e. building a multi-billion dollar corporation like microsoft or apple) that you can achieve without college, well then you should be doing that right now.

But the honest truth is that if you don’t graduate high school, people look down on you, and you probably won’t have a very highly paid job either. But then i would ask, what is your opinion of happiness in life. Some people simply don’t give a fuck about what job they have or how much it pays as long as they are happy doing it.

No, but it does show colleges how well you can study, take tests, general things you need to do in order to be able comprehend complex subjects.

It simply shows your ability to overcome things that are difficult. Which is why people who are successful in the weight room are generally successfully in the real world. It’s something you have to put time and effort into to get results. If you show no work ethic in high school, you will generally not show any real work ethic in anything else you do.

Though… my grades in highschool were abysmal, and my grades in college still are not exactly great. So take anything i say on the subject of learning with a grain of salt.

That being said, i’m trying to build a work ethic and study habits pretty late in the game, and it would have been much easier to just learn the routine in my younger years and not suffer the consequences now.

And I forgot to add- what are you looking to do after highschool? Do you have an idea what career field you would like to get into?

High school is important if you want to get a scholarship to college. If you don’t want to go to college than it’s just important to graduate and your overall grades won’t mean dick.

Yeah you obviously do other stuff in HS which is great and if you are trying to get into college that is looked at too, but as mentioned your SAT or ACT scores are usually the most weighted, depending on the college. Better grades make it easier but its not the only thing. Just try to do as best as you can from here on out and look forward.

I get decent grades in most of my clases but my school has a 0-tolerance policy on missed homeworks. Meaning if I miss a homework I get a 0 in the grade book. That fucks up the whoel average. My difficulty is in concentration, people call it ADD or ADHD, I call it lack of maturity.

Its easy to say- Shut up and do your work, but it is really not that simple for me and I dont know why… I am in senior year and I still have these problems, I am aware of all of them and I try to fix them but it just seems so difficult and I fail badly. I feel like I have tried everything, it works for 2 weeks and then I just lose focus of things.
