I thought that some of you might find this interesting: an ex-military man went into a building at Gateway Center and took at least one guy hostage. He supposedly has at least one gun and some bombs. The police have secured the building and the surrounding area, including having to block off some major roads.
Boulevard of the Allies and Liberty Ave are completely blocked off and most of downtown Pittsburgh is closed down according to some of my students. They say that traffic is a mess, but I have been at the school since 5 am so I don’t know what it is really like. I hope everything clears up and the hostage(s) are okay.

Anybody else notice that Skyzyck hasn’t been around lately? :-)
I have noticed that. ;} (and its- Mcstryzlezwenskovikosniakski, but pronounced “dobbs”.)
I picked up on this story during my morning wake up/news fix, but I avoid Downtown like the plague.
Stuff has been a little crazy lately, but not that kind of crazy. Wife and soon to be born are at 39 wks. and 9 lbs., so I’ve been busy preparing a baby room/ entire house. I had no idea that kids need their own miniature house within a house!
Work has gone absolutely ballistic. We could do 180 hrs. a week and still need to catch up, but the darn weeks are too short.
And today begins the hunting season for the wily Maitake. The timing couldn’t be better, cause I could really use a nice walk in the woods.
Hey, gimme a break – I was working from memory and thought I got pretty darn close to your name, Mr. Dobbs.
Actually, that all sounds hectic, but good, Dad. Is the local economy doing so well?
Maitake? Really? You? I see you more as a wild bore (yes, that spelling is intended) hunter.
Yeah, It’s a good hectic. And Yeah, the local economy is doing quite well, at least in heavy industry. My company is going to be part of a documentary on the revival of the steel industry on the three rivers, and there have been some very big companies in several industries re-building, developing, and changing up their primary focus for long term production.
I’ve been a mycology buff for about 15 years. Nothing like a nice meal after a good hike in the woods. Pic is a whopper from last year. I still like certain types of wild bore too, depending on the definition, but the hunting days are behind me now.
Gotta say, that was a quick and elegant dispatch of the Texas wild bore in the cam pics thread. His momentum and lack of balance worked against him very nicely.
These are found in parts of Japan too. Are you at all familiar with them, or are they somewhat uncommon? I’ve read somewhere that they used to be highly sought after and used as gifts to win favor with local Samurai, but that could just be interwebs gobbledygook.
