I am dying to train now. I have completely lost my appetite and have hardly been eating anything at all. I am definitely looking a lot leaner though. After my exam on Monday I will be heading straight to the gym.

I got a chance to train today but there was no bjj so I just lifted weights:

Warmup x 5 rounds
Pushups: 12
Squats: 12
Situps: 12
Hip raises: 12

DE Bench w/ Chains (100lbs)
135+100x3
185+100x5x3

ME Bench w/ Chains (100lbs)
185+100Ɨ3
225+100Ɨ3
275+100Ɨ1 (failed 2nd rep)

Incline Bench Press
135x10
185x10
225x8

  • Between sets of bench I did:
    Barbell rows 205x6x10

Bradford Press
95x3x10

  • Between sets of Bradford Press I did:
    Pullups
    BWx3x5

I wanted to do more but I was training with a guy today who wouldn’t shut up between sets so I ran out of time. Good reminder why I prefer to lift alone.

BJJ this morning:

We drilled the omoplata from closed guard and ways to transition to a kimura or a reversal with a kimura grip. Then we drilles a way to take mount when someone rolls out of the omoplata by hanging onto their elbow and pressing your thigh into their upper arm while tucking your foot under their side. From there you can transition into side control, mount or kesa gatame. I tweeked my neck funny while rolling out of an omoplata so I didn’t roll. It’s not bad but I just didn’t want to risk making it worse.

Tomorrow:

Am BJJ:
The instructor was sick so he just opened up the gym and let us have an open mat. Since I was the most experienced guy there (though that isn’t saying much. It was all newer white belts) I lead us through the warm-up and taught some basic tie-ups and takedowns from the tie-up and rolled a few rounds. I discovered using a submission that I don’t know the name of. I have seen Ken Shamrock use it before and it was very easy to set up and execute. I will have to try it out on some more experienced guys this weekend.

You get to scarf hold and then reach back and hook under their leg and then grab the insides of your thighs and squeeze your knees together, squeezing the air out of them and not allowing them to take another breath.

This afternoon:
Warmup (circuit w/ no rest)
Pullups: 5x6,6,5,4,3
Pushups: 5x12
BW Squats: 5x12
Situps: 5x12
Hip raises: 12

DE Paused Squats w/ Chains
45+100x5
135+100x5
225+100x5x3

ME Block Pull w/ Chains
225+100x3
315+100x3
385+100x1
455+100x1

Safety Squat Bar Squats
45x10
135x10
185x5x10

Always heard that one called the ā€œThighmaster choke/chest compression.ā€ I think Bas Rutten is generally credited with popularizing that one.

Yall probably don’t know this but I am a singer/guitarist. I have been playing solo for a long time now but have always wanted to get another band together. I randomly met a band that had no frontman through a plumber that came to my house to fix a clogged drain and now we will be practicing on friday nights. Unfortunately, this means no more bjj on saturdays because our practices have been going until about 2am and bjj is at 9:00. I will be going to the Sunday open mat instead and doing my accessory lifts and running on saturdays.

Upright Rows:
45x10
95x10
115x10
135x10
115x10
95x10

Rear delt raises:
25’sx3x10

Side delt raises:
35’sx3x10

Barbell curls:
65x3x10

Dumbbell concentration curls
30’sx3x10

Open mat:

I got some good rolls in. My reversals from guard were working well today. I was able to disrupt one guy’s base from closed guard so much that I pushed him to his back with my feet still crossed and went straight to mount.

Movement class:
This class looks easy but it is brutally difficult. We learned how to lizard crawl 1 inch off the floor. Then we proceeded to lizard crawl for 30 minutes straight. I have never felt such lactic acid buildup in my life. I sweat out 8lbs!

BJJ AM Class:

We drilled hook flips from butterfly guard. I had a hard roll with a particularly spazzy guy named Tony who’s whole game revolves around stiff arming and running away. It’s a really weird game where he’s always on defense but since that’s all he ever does, he is really good at avoiding submissions.

Pullups:5x7,6,5,4,3
Pushups:5x13
Squats:5x13
Situps:5x13
Hip Raises:5x13

Hit the bag a little while I taught my daughter how to squat.

NoGi AM BJJ

We drilled more hook flips from butterfly guard, how to reverse directions if they post when you try the initial hook flip and how to guillotine when they post on you. I was really underslept so I didn’t roll.

SSB Squat

Block Lunges (holding plate overhead)
45x4x10

Sorry to interrupt your log; I was wondering what the abbreviations meant for the DE squats and ME block pulls, I googled them but couldn’t find any definitive answers.

That means dynamic effort and maximum effort. If you want to read more about it google conjugate training method, Louis Simmons or Westside Barbell.

BJJ Class
We drilled papercutter chokes in a gi. Then I had 4 hard rolls.

AM BJJ

Drilled moving to single leg x guard from a failed hook flip. Then we moved from single leg x to leg drag to smash pass, knee on belly and to same side ankle lock, esteema lock, and opposite side ankle lock.

I had a balls-to-the-wall roll with Tony who is impossible to have a flow roll with because he apparently does not have the ability to chill out.
