HonkeyKong BJJ Log

There are so many sub and transition options from there! I wind up in that position a lot but only now are they teaching me what to do when I get there. That rock choke was outright mean.

BJJ Class:

We drilled a weird choke from side guard that I would never, ever use because it was so difficult to set up. I rolled a few rounds and did alright. One guy I rolled with was the spazziest guy I have ever rolled with and a complete dick. He just about broke my wrist trying to muscle a Kimura by stomping on my forearm, kicked me in the eye, started before we bumped fists, etc… The other day he kicked a guy in the face as well and left a big gash on his forehead. If he doesn’t chill out someone is going to hurt him.

Drilled estima locks, using the estima to turn someone face down in order to pass the guard and transitioning back and forth between estima and straight ankle locks when someone is kicking their feet in an attempt to get out. I rolled with a few guys and did really well against them, although, the morning class was almost all white belts.

We had a guy like that a while back (before I had my own school). Dude would punch people (including the higher ranks) hard when we were supposed to be going light, or try to slam on locks with no concern for his training partners (despite often times them going easy with him because he was newer). He finally got a talking to by my instructor and was told in no uncertain terms, ā€œif you keep doing that, not only am I going to give those higher ranks the green light to hit/sub you back, but I am going to kick you out of my school.ā€

We’ve had others guys who only had one hear 110%, regardless of whether they were training against the least athletic unthreatening white belt in the class, or the black belts. One such was actually very talented and a naturally really tough dude, but he wound up hurting a few people and it got to the point where people were coming up and complaining about him after almost every class (despite him being warned on several occasions to ā€œtake it down a notchā€). Eventually he was asked to leave and go train elsewhere. Although talent is great and there is nothing wrong with intense training in the right context, the ability to exercise control and to appropriate one’s skills/intensity level to the person you are working with or the drill you are doing are even more important. Without those things, you are just creating monsters.

I complete agree. I am not opposed to having some 100% rounds but I would still like everyone to be in control of their techniques the whole time. I was really surprised because he is a blue belt from Caio Terra’s school but he still has the newb ā€œjittersā€ that most people lose after about 6 months.

The instructor that night pulled me aside and got onto me about being too nice during the round.

Drilled russian tie to single leg takedown and russian tie to rollover takedown using a kimura grip.

I rolled several rounds and was pretty happy with how I did. My control is getting better. Also, I got a sub with a chest compressor which is something I have tried a lot but always failed.

BJJ class

We drilled the cross collar choke from mount and a way to bait people into an armbar by exaggerating the reach across so they have a chance to reach and push on the back of your arm and then turning your chest behind their elbow and bringing your knee behind their head so you wind up in S mount with an armbar grip. Rob showed me how to do it from knee on belly as well which felt very easy and natural. I rolled 4 rounds and did better than ever.

I was in a rut for a few weeks where I didn’t feel like I was improving but I seem to be breaking out of it now. The ebb and flow of training is tough in BJJ.

Drilled setups for the Americana from side mount then transitioning to scarf hold and working through the arm lock/shoulder lock/head and arm choke submission flow a la Josh Barnett. Good class with a lot of stuff that would work well for me. I rolled 1 round with a newish guy and worked the new Americana setup.

We worked on passing the half guard into scarf hold and then did a submission flow from there. This is a big part of my game so it was good to sharpen those techniques up a bit. Then we drilled a darce (spl?) Choke from half guard.

The technique today was really good. When you are in side control and your opponent swisa their far arm under to try and bridge out, you just move to S mount, sit on them and cinch their arm between your thigh and your upper arm. Then you can chase a bunch of different submissions. My favorite was the kimura but there was also an easy straight armbar or extended armbar. There was also an Americana if they try to pull their arm out of the straight armbar.

Good rolls today. That guy that is way too rough and has no control slammed me in the face with his shoulder and I started bleeding everywhere out of my nose. It also gave me a black eye… again. I got mad and handled him a lot rougher than I probably should have. He stood up and grabbed me in a wrestler’s clinch so I popped up his elbow and got him in a head and arm hold, stepped behind him and hip tossed him and then set up the keylock from scarf hold. I spent the rest of the round cleaning up my blood that had gotten everywhere.

Drilled triangle from guard, setting up the triangle after a failed armbar and setting up the triangle from no gi spider guard (ish). From butterfly guard, get a 2 on 1 grip on their left wrist and stiff leg them with your right foot in their left hip with toes pointed outward. When they try to put pressure into you, release your foot and pull on their left wrist. Then turn your body to the left and bite down on their back with your left leg, pull their arm across their face as you wrap up the triangle with your right leg. It was a really good way to set the triangle.

We learned a cool escape when someine tries to take your back from turtle. When they roll to the side you keep your knees up high and pop your hips up over their leg, then you shrimp your hips up onto their torso (you are still on your side at this point), reach around their head with your arm closest to them and jump across them sideways. You land in a perfect kesa gatame and smash the wind out of them in the process. This move was very, very cool.

Rolls went well. I caught a guy with an inverted armbar which surprised me. I had a really tough roll with a guy who’s guard game was really good. Then he spent some time showing me a cool half guard escape that lined up perfectly with the anaconda/darce choke game we have been working in the AM class. Great day of training.

I am taking a deload week. I’ll just be going to bjj this week and nothing else.

Noon BJJ class. I absolutely killed it today. We drilled a cool way to set up a north south choke when someone gets their legs free while you have their back. Then I rolled for 4 rounds and was able to pull off 2 techniques that I learned recently. The first was the escape when someone has your back that lands you in scarf hold and the second was the halfguard escape I learned on Saturday. I wasn’t able to set up the anaconda choke from there but the guard pass worked very well. Then I helped a new guy for a while who needed to learn how to escape side control.
