Home Defense

A moat full of alligators, piranhas, and electric eels.

One of my favorite movies…

Yeah - the 40 cal is a good compromise. Although, I like 45s as well.

Keep in mind many 9mm rounds won’t even penetrate a car door.

Whats more important is the actual use of the weapon. Less burglaries would happen if criminals knew there was a 12 gauge pointed at their head. The more people use their weapons, the more criminals would think about breaking in before they do it.

Im a blacksmith, so Ive got about a dozen weapons around the house. Heres a few.

  1. A high carbon sword/axe thing with about 50 barbs on it.
  2. 25" knife
  3. katana
  4. wakizashi
  5. butchers knife (custom)
  6. 6 or 7 utility knives of varying lengths.
  7. and a club I made one day when I was bored that has bits of metal imbedded in it.

Also, Im a blacksmith, so I have nothing good to steal. lol.

My house is full of so many things that would make me feel sorry for anyone breaking in. First off my Dad is a huge strong mother fucker, my pit doesn’t like strangers, loaded 45 in a quick release lockbox (takes like 1 second to open it if you know the combo), lots of knives a few of them are HUGE - I’d say almost sword length, and plenty of shot guns in the garage.

Oh and everyone in my family has lots of gun experience, so its not like we don’t know how to use them.

get past this dog, I’ve seen her get into it with another dog, not a pretty sight. I feel sorry for the person I might need to sick her on.

IMO in a home defense situation you dont want something that will penetrate into the other rooms, might be a neighbors apt or a kids room risking hitting them as well.

I like for home defense my 357 highway patrol special with 38 special target rounds.
they wont go through the walls but they will go into a person or animal nice.
with talking to a sherriff budy of mine I will be picking up a glock 19 really soon though.

and the .40 cals and the 9mm are not too different of rounds, the 9mm is slightly smaller rounds but with owning both and shooting both I really think they are both managable and its a personal perferance

9mm rounds are a little bit cheaper than the 40s

I have my dogs, they are not fool proof yes anyone can get past a dog,but they are a good warning system for the house.

then we have security bars on the windows and doors
and an alarm system that pages us when its tripped.

My Great-Great Uncle’s WW1 British military-issue bayonet.

From the Black Watch.

Here’s my list.
In the nightstand:
Springfield XD 9mm
Under the bed:
machete
In the next room(locked up):
2- 12 gauge shotguns
deer rifle (7 mag)
target rifle (243)
Police precision marksman rifle (308)
plinker rifle (22 mag)
high powered air rifle (.17)
various knives, axes, hatchets, and cutlery

Boyscout motto- “Be Prepared”
My motto- “You never know when all hell will break loose”

Nich, let me know how you like that 19. I am thinking about either that or a 17. Where are you located, and how much do you expect to pay?

Welcome to T-Nation.

I’d say you had both mottos covered pretty well. Are you also the type with a bomb shelter, and a few years of MREs stored up?

Makarov in 9mm makarov
Makarov in .380
Rem 870 loaded with birdshot

Sisters (13 & 18) are able to handle makarovs
Parents are able to handle the shotgun

All know to run into a safe room, lock the doors and call the police.

(Parents own a videostore, we have been robbed at gun point 3 times and our neighboring shop was stabbed over 40 dollars, and yet we can’t get a ccw)

currently its my 4 years MA training and a broom handle

in future i’d like a liar bird trained to roar like a lion (they can mimic just about any noise and i mean ANY noise)

paired up with a wolverine, they can take down carribou by them selves and run at 30mph in thick snow. they have also been known to steal food from polar bears

who wants to fuck with that?

Actually, you’d be surprised what a 9mm will penetrate. 9mm goes right through most car doors.

There are police demo videos on the market(watched one at a convoy course I went to), which show exactly what different size bullets will do to a car.

I understand the original argument was about home defense, just saying. On that note, 9mm ball will penetrate something like 6-8 layers of sheetrock. That’s the equivalent of 3 or 4 walls in your home.

What do I keep? Springfield 1911 double stack. Can’t go wrong with 14 rounds of .45. First 6 rounds in the home mag are Glaser Safety blue tips, if I have to go past those, it’s Cor-Bon 200gr JHP +P.

Wife also has a 20ga single shot under the bed, loaded with birdshot. Next planned purchase is a 12ga pump with integral light and pistol grip, to be loaded with #1 buckshot or possibly a beanbag round to start the party.

We’ve mentioned your home defense tools, what is your plan? Tools are useless without a plan.

My plan: wake up wife, grab pistol and Streamlight, move to top of stairs while she works the phones. From top of stairs I can block access to the children’s rooms, and I have a clean shot on anyone approaching(single avenue of approach - stairs). For an additional step, I just saw this on another board:

Keep a chemlight in your nightstand, with spare house keys attached. When the police show up, crack the light, and toss it out the window to them, let them clear the house(it’s their job after all). I’ll just have to make sure the dog is upstairs at that point.

I’m sorry boatguy, what did you say?

Your avatar has caught my attention, for the moment…

Alarm system we never set and a 30oz DiMarini under the bed.

Here’s some of the toys in my house. Remington model 1100 semi auto.
