Listen, patty cakes, my 15 years as a firefighter/EMT has consistently put me knee deep in the tragedy and triumph of human life. You think you know me? You don’t know fuck all about me.
Ever deliver a baby in the bathroom of a shitty apartment or on the side of the road? My crew just last week delivered one three weeks ago; it was my second in the field delivery. Kid was a real screamer.
Ever do unsuccessful CPR on a three month old, and have to tell the mom that her kid is dead only to have her wail and clutch at your arm to please keep trying even though the child is dead? That was my reality. (by the way, she prayed her ASS off the entire time. food for thought)
Ever hand dig a ten year old out of the side of the sand hill he was buried alive in? Have to walk around for years seeing flashes of his face and the dirt in his teeth from trying to get a tube past all the dirt that was packed into his throat? That’s what I seen for a few years after that one.
Ever cut down a woman who hung herself in her bedroom? listen to her teenage daughter cry her eyes out and pray to god that she not die? Your god wasn’t listening that time either apparently.
Ever have a successful CPR save? Go into their house, find them with no pulse, do your job well, and have them come see you at the fire station some time later to say thanks? You think to yourself, “Damn, I knew that guy when he was dead!”
Don’t lecture me on what I do or do not know about human “life”. I’ve seen more than my share of tragedy and triumph in the arena of “life”, patty cakes. That dog’s not gonna hunt.
This explains a lot Sparky. What do you feel is the purpose of all this suffering and your having to participate in it? Honest question.

I don’t feel that there really IS a purpose to it, just the extreme ups and downs of life and how we all respond to it. I know that may sound cold and perhaps a bit detached, but I really don’t see there being a purpose to any of the suffering we all have to deal with at some time or another.
As far as MY role in all of it? Well, I suppose it’s having the awesome opportunity to be of real value to people in a time of great need. Seriously, for me, it’s all being an immediate and direct positive force in peoples lives. As cheesy as that sounds, I really do get off on that. Firefighters, cops, paramedics; they place themselves in a position to have the equipment, the training, and the resources to make all the difference in what could very well be a family’s darkest time. It’s as close to being a super hero as one can get. LOL
As an atheist, since I obviously don’t believe in any sort of a god, I think that all we have is each other to rely on in any dark time. In spite of all the ugliness I have to deal with, I still love being part of a team that makes the difference in peoples lives when it all turns to shit.

To add to Flamers post, you can put 4 Firefighters on an engine all with different belief systems and you get the same result. Four people willing to bust their asses for others and work together like a well oil machine.
As for the super hero part, I leave that to my daughter and my sons. It’s a wonderful feeling when they are asked to write a paper for school describing a hero and their topic of choice is me! Not a sports star, movie star or singer, but the person it is supposed to be (and two of my boys are in middle school and both had that to say this year).

Had this happen this year as well; truly a wonderful feeling, for sure.
But specifically to the super hero part, I always say that as a joke in that we sleep in a special location (lair), drive an awesome specialized vehicle (batcar?), and respond at a moments notice, and at all hours of the day when called into action (bat signal?).
Good stuff, and the best job ever if it weren’t for the shit bird politicians.

In your world there is, not in mine. :-)
I don’t have a world Sparky. Neither do you. You are a true hero though as is Lanchefan and all other civil servants who do courageous honorable work for little pay. Thank you.
Brother Abdu says Hi Raj. Talked to him for a while at the prayer walk downtown today. Snapped this phone shot just for you. I told him about you. He told me to tell you he’s goin back down there in the next few months and he’d be thrilled to meet you. I told him not to bet the farm on your willingness, but I’d relay the message. You might even like him. Today he stood onstage, an Arab man embracing a messianic Jewish rabbi proclaiming peace between the sons of Isaac and Ishmael through the blood of Christ Jesus which makes them both chosen sons of God.
Well thanks for that Trib. He seems like a pretty interesting individual, someone I would like to have a conversation with if I ever had the chance. I actually live pretty far from where the debate was held, it was at the University of West Texas. However I do live only a few short hours from Detroit and I’ve always been interested in attending a church service at some point in my life. If I’m ever in the area, I’ll shoot you a PM and perhaps you could give me info on his church.
Don’t expect a conversion though ![]()
My pleasure man. Yeah, he’s a great brother with a riveting testimony as an ex Muslim champion apologist. Very sharp guy who loves Jesus with his whole heart. You’d always be welcome at my church too Raj. THAT would be an experience for ya fer sher. =] Maybe one time when Brother Abdu is there. Google Maps
From the Catholic QnA thread. Thought it should go here too.
Speaking of offense. This is my thread and as good a place as any to do this. I was myself offensive to the Lord and a poor witness of His character by my shameful public attacks on KingKai25 before allowing him the opportunity of so much as 10 seconds of conversation in my direction. I do hereby repent as promised and declare my premature estimation of this young man to have been among the wrongest in my life. This is one of the horrible sins of my past and I have no excuse. Aragorn recently rightly rebuked me for not taking these things up privately first. I should have.
We’ve talked extensively through PM’s and he’s forgiven me. I’m humbled and grateful. God be praised.
Deuteronomy 6. What the Jews call the “Shema” in it’s immediate context from the vulgate. Jerome might not have approved of you tatooing that on your body Chris. I bet B16 doesn’t do that. T1 has a bunch of very old ones he wishes he didn’t though.

Yes, please tell me why St. Jerome would not approve?
B16 doesn’t do what?
I have no clue what T1 is, is that something from the terminator trilogy?

Na, that is impossible.
If A then B for example can be a lot of things, true, false, barbaric, idiotic, outdated, but not a lie.
Especially not if they indeed do B to you if you are caught doing A.
