Help w/ Essay On The War In Iraq

The purpose of my essay is to argue why pulling out of Iraq early would be a bad thing, leading to consequences such as destabilization of the progressing Iraqi democratic government, negative effects on the economy in both Iraq and the U.S., the war being a lossed investment and disrepectful to fallen soldiers, opening Iraq to become haven for militant terrorist regims, etc… So I need help of where to look for sources to support my essay. So if anyone could point me to news aritcles, journal articles, books, etc… that would be greatly appreciated.

You can start with a Limerick?
There once was a man from Iraq,
who had an extremely chapped sack. His name was Sadaam.
He applied some bag balm.
And commenc-ed to camel fudge pack.

How’s that. I just woke up.

Go ahead and check out fox news for some unbiased journalism.

Come on, I don’t want this thread to be hijacked by people making ignorant remarks, I am just trying to write an essay and I need some good sources with hard evidence.

If we pull out Saddam will build a time machine and attack us with WMDs on 9/11.

Job85:

When you put in the following key words on a Google Search:

“consequences leaving iraq”

You get 575,000 articles, papers, positions and discussions.

However…most are going to take a VERY strong position on whether it is best to leave or stay the course…

You will have to take a position and strongly defend it…

So…put in those Key Words in a Google Search, and you should be on your way!

Mufasa

Job85,

You might start with any information you can find on the decisions to see the Marshall Plan after WWII. It might be a way to give your paper some historical context - after all, deciding to stick around after winning a war has its roots in previous decisions.

Don’t know how much that helps - Mufasa’s suggestion is the best one. There’s no substitute to old fashioned, dull research. But if you are writing a paper, be sure to be selective with your sources - as you know, anybody with an opinion can start a website.

You may want to search some Military Blogs and get your ne first hand.

Strategypage.com is a good source to start. From there maybe Blackfive. You will find a lot of links. This info is presented by people who where there. As real as it gets.

Sorry for the Limerick. But it wasn’t ignorant anyway it was just stupid.

To answer your question I need to know what level class it is for, what kind of school/professor. Is it a writing class or a social sciences class? Do you need to have support for your essay, or just give an opinion?

All in all, no one knows for sure what would happen if we pull out early. We pay the president to make that kind of decision. Bush has to make sure that the new Iraqee government does not collapse before the next election. I think one way to look at the essay is “what would be the absolute worst case scenario if?” If we stay an extra year, the worst case is not all that bad. If we leave early it will be one of the greatest flops in history.

Be very, very careful to analyze your sources. As Mufasa said, most people who have taken the time to write about it have a very strong position on whether to go or stay-- i.e., it’s full of holes and personal bias that has absolutely nothing to do with the issue at hand. Tread carefully.

Just to add to what Red Monk said…

I learned in debate that it’s probably as important (if not MORE important) to understand the CONTRARY view to your position than it is to know your basic premise (“That pulling out early would be a BAD thing…”)

Sometimes that even involves accepting that at least SOME contrary views have validity.

There is nothing more impressive to a paper and/or argument than the ability to truly defend against those contrary views.

Mufasa

mertdawg,

No problems man I just really needed help with this essay. But to answer your question it is for an English Research Writing class and it has to be an arguementative paper and yes I need to give support for my essay to help argue my point.

Check out Military News and Opinion Articles | Military.com
it has a lot of articles written concerning the war and by reputable authors (Oliver North, etc). You’ll have to browse the archives by the author’s name, so it may take some time, but North is always good.

So far with my essay I am taking the stance in support of staying in Iraq to stay away from the consequences of destabilization of the gov, creating a terrorist haven, etc… But I am still having trouble finding some sources to back this opinion compared to pulling out now or soon. I need about 5 legitmate sources for this paper which has to be 5+ pages in length.

But so far the possible legs for the essay I have come up with are: 1. Iraq will fall into chaos (destablization of the government/political process) 2. Iraq becoming a haven for terrorists and the like 3. Lossed investment by the U.S. 4. Loss of justification for going to war 5. Weakened repuation by the U.S. for not “staying the course” 6. Loss of dignity for our fallen soldiers.

I am doing alot of research over the internet but its just seems like I can’t find anything in detail besides the fact Iraq will fall into chaos. I really need help with this because I got to turn in an outline with quotes from sources this Thursday but I also got a shitload of other stuff to get done aswell. So if any t-nationers can help me some more or offer detailed suggestions that would be great.

Don’t forget to reference our pulling out of Somolia.

Al Queda perceived that as a sign of our weakness. When you are seen as weak, your enemies are encouraged to attack.

Don’t forget to check out the NY Times and CBS too. They seem to be pretty unbiased

Another fact is that Iraq is currently a hotbed for terrorists, which is a good thing. With Islam being at the wheel Iraq will never be truly democratic or free. However, us being there is making many terrorists focus their operations against U.S. troops in Iraq, instead of operations here in the States, a so called “buffer zone.”

Seriously, check out farenHYPE911. Much better than that piece of shit Micheal Moore put out.

Thanks guys, just keep droppn more info or thoughts about the subject cuz so far I am getting pointed in a good direction.

  1. The current Iraqi “government” is already unstable because it is being merely a U.S. prop, there for show and nothing more. Once the U.S. leaves it will fall apart, which is exactly what it is to be expected with a puppet regime presiding over a single nation that should be three.

  2. The war has already had a negative effect on the U.S. and Iraq’s economies. Ours by increasing the national debt to record proportions, theirs by destroying it. Staying in Iraq costs money. Spending more money is not going to help our economy.

  3. Fallen soldiers are dead, so staying or leaving Iraq has no impact on them. On the other hand, it’s very disrespectful to continue sending living soldiers to Iraq so that they may join the ranks of all the others who have died for a mistake. Pull out immediately.

  4. Iraq’s borders have been open since the invasion first began and thousands of volunteers from surrounding nations poured in to fight against the “Great Satan”. There are already plenty of militant terrorists in that nation, with more being created throughout the entire Arab world as a result of the U.S. presence. Terrorist organizations routinely use American-inflicted casualities in Iraq as propaganda tools.

So there’s your essay in 4 points. Quite simple, really. Just expand a bit on them and you’re all set.

Oh, wait…
