Help Me Read

I used to read for fun all the time when I was younger. Literally all day sometimes. Then reading became not cool, then I went to college and reading became of the textbook kind, and now still in college and I read my school textbooks as well as every strength/conditioning book I have time for.

I am almost through super training and I realized I want the next book I read not to involve taking notes with it. Then I realized I haven’t read for fun in a long time and don’t even know where to start when picking out a book.

Any recommendations? Only thing that has caught my attention so far is the novels based off that show justified (mostly just because its one of my favorite shows). I used to read Clive Cussler books but eventually got kind of bored. So any suggestions would be great.

Also if anybody knows of a book that is training related that is more “fun” to read. For example Never Let Go by Dan John is one of my favorites and i blasted through that in less than a week.

Thanks

What do you like reading besides strength and conditioning books?

I am in a similar situation as you and rekindled my interest in novels through reading Stephen King’s work for the first time.

Honestly I’m not even sure. I guess action adventure stuff but almost anything as long as its interesting. It’s hard for me to find books I guess cause its so much about the writers style that appeals to me as much as the content. I can’t believe I’m having such a hard time finding a book, or even an author.

Robert E Howard - The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian

Action adventure and easy reading. Several small stories. There’s a few books, but I think this is the first.

You can thank csulli.

Have you read ‘Call of the wild’ by Jack London? IMO it’s one of the greats. It’s an easy read, and a powerful story.

Vince Flynn, Brad Thor, Preston & Child, Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. You are in college; it is a must read while you are in college. Then pick up everything by Hemmingway and read all of it.

Also, ignore everyone else’s advise until after you have followed mine.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yeah I read call of the wild a long time ago but I liked it. Haha sounds like I’ll have to check out fear and loathing in las vegas too. For some reason the name Vince Flynn rings a bell…

This thread just reminded me of reading friday night lights back in middle school. One of my all time favorites and I would recommend it to you guys as a thanks for your help haha.

Sandman Slim novels by Richard Kadrey. James Stark was sent to Hell by a black magician where he became the most feared fighter in Satan’s pits. what doesn’t kill you makes you stromger. eventually he became the Devils own hitman.

comes back to L.A.(where else?) trying to avenge his girlfriend’s murder and find the one that sent him downtown. beheads a magician and puts the still living head on a skateboard with legs. the board does have a hole in it so the beer the head drinks drains through. he’s not a total monster.

lets see what else…takes a paying gig as his ex-bosses bodyguard while Satan smoozes with Hollywood’s finest, psychotic angels, angel hit squad working with homeland security, gentlemen’s club where the entertainment is torturing captured angels, zombies, demons, a whip that can pull out your spine, Extreme violence, blood, gore, humor, great fight scenes.
start with Sandman Slim : A Novel and you won’t stop until you get to the last one.

One of my favorites was Dune by Frank Herbert. Politics, warfare, spirituality, drugs, assasins, you name it, the book has got it covered. Might have to reread it come to think of it.

I’ll definitely back up the Vince Flynn stuff, Read American Assassin first. Also the Prey series by John Sandford, is a great serial killer/detective on the edge type series

Good advice on here so far. I’d second Hemingway…I read and re-read him as a young adult. 1984 if you like political stuff. The Game of Thrones series if you like fantasy stuff.

I like the Count of Monte Cristo.
Scott Lynch’s Gentleman Bastard series Lies of Locke Lamora, Red Seas Under Red Skies, and the Republic of Thieves.

I had the same problem as you. I had not read anything in soo long asides from textbooks and journals. I used to read Dostoyevsky and Nabokov. I had a whole list of books I was going to read. Then I tried reading one of Nabokov’s more difficult works and just couldn’t get through it. Only got like 25 pages in. Soo then I decided to read some straight up garbage fucking easy reads to get back into the swing of reading.

I bought the Hunger Games Trilogy. Read them in like five days and now I able to sit down and read again. Its like I had to dust off the cobwebs haha. So maybe give that a try. Read something super easy. Anything by John Grisham is usually really good and easy to read.

I agree. I know exactly what you mean.

It’s for that very reason why I find it difficult to even read fiction nowadays, with the exception of Hemingway, particularly his short stories. The man is the most brilliant writer to ever exist, I swear.

Nowadays I just read a lot of books on U.S. history. Incidentally, if anyone knows of good books that cover the periods of the Reconstruction up to WW1, it would be greatly appreciated.
