It’s a great place to get your vehicle stolen!

haha

I only really ever head up to Edmonton for weightlifting. Besides West Ed, I can’t think of any reason to head up there. And I don’t even like malls. If you want outdoors, just head west to the mountains instead of driving all the way up to Edmonton.
Never been anywhere where folks drove faster on ice/snow covered streets and highways.

And that’s coming from someone who drives fast on ice/snow covered highways.
yeah we’re kind of psychotic about our driving. Still when it’s half the year or more that you drive on that not on ly do you get pretty good but if you ever want to get anywhere you have to accept the insanity.

Hey from Red Deer! Spent some time in Drumheller at the museum which was pretty cool. I’d love to do some mountain biking in the badlands this summer.

I can give a little insight about Drumheller; lived there for 6 years (moved away in 2003). IMO it’s a great place to visit, but a shitty place to live. Nothing grows there as it’s in the bottom of a valley and the soil leaches the remnants of its mining history.

I have an old lower back injury from deadlifting which was manageable until I moved there. I suffered back pain almost daily; when I moved away the pain went away totally within a week. The old-timers there say that the ground still filters poisons into the air; didn’t believe it at first, but I sure do now.

It’s also a Penitentiary town - crime rate was high, lots of disfunctional families. The only Gym in town is (was) located in the basement of a 2-story residence and the equipment was the cast-offs of a Gym in Brooks. Better than nothing, but not by much.

I shouldn’t be totally negative; the walking/biking paths are second to none, and the features of the landscape are exquisite and unique. Located in the bottom of a valley, we would get extremes of weather, several weeks in Summer of +30 Celcius and several weeks in Winter of -30 Celcius. The tourists in the summer would make my 5 min. commute up to a half-hour. Lookie-loos caused more accidents than I can count, haha.

Anyway, that’s my take on Drum. Back to lurking

Drumheller does have a pretty wild golf course, with the front 9 being nothing out of the ordinary and the back 9 being carved into the badlands…veeeery challenging

Im currently in faireview for afew days for work. Its awful, as is everything n of Edmonton.

Fake. Troll.

Everyone knows they don’t have electricity in Canada, let alone the internet.
This is not entirely true.

Our polar bears have internet access.
I used to walk 8 miles in snow shoes to the nearest polar bear den and ask Gary (an old polar bear buddy of mine) to go online for me here and post a certain number of witty comments and a gif or two.
He would have let me do it myself but his wife ( she’s a really controlling moose…you know those moose from Medicine Hat are like that) wouldn’t let someone like me near their computer.

Where the hell is faireview? I have never heard of that place before…

I also forgot about Fort Edmonton Park!! That place is wonderful if you’re ever here for a visit and need something to do!

Michael J Fox was born here.

Paul Plakas (a fitness expert) is also from here. He has hosted shows such as X Weighted and umm oh ya, taking it off.

GOOO EDMONTON!!

I don’t want this thread to die :frowning:

Fairview is around 550 km NW of Edmonton. By most standards, it is indeed a terrible place.

Though I beg to differ on all places North of Edmonton. For someone who likes outdoorsy stuff like hunting, canoeing or sledding/quadding, its a great place. If you are into big city activities, then it isn’t for you.

The Dunvegan and Peace River valleys are incredibly beautiful Spring through early Fall, though they look like crap during the Winter.

The guy who invented the Java programming language is from Calgary. And that Plakas guy was actually born in Greece, and raised in Swift Current/Calgary/Hinton. Just started working in Edmonton. Ha-zah.

DAMN! I didn’t think anyone would even know who Paul Plakas was.

I met him, you know. I have his autograph on a post-it note taped to my mirror.

“To Jen:
Eat clean, train hard”

That’s what it says…

Red Deer also has that Sylvan Lake place. Though last time I went there it was all water and almost no beach. WHAT’S UP WITH THAT?

I may or may not have had to google him and read up on his website. I’d heard of those shows though. You know he doesn’t even have a wikipedia page? And is he skinny in person? He looked a little on the skinny side on his website. Or maybe I’m just tired.

That’s what happens when the population as a whole gets fat enough that normal folk sunbathing becomes harmful to the eyes. Simultaneously saving your retinas and forcing people at the beach to swim (ie exercise). Brilliant.

Yeah I know. Actually, over the past summer they moved part of the main road back a bit to extend the beach which is good. The lake is great for boating and taking out the SeaDoo, but if you want some beach head over down the road to Gull Lake, huge beach area.

I guess if you’re just passing through all you would see is Gas Alley! Haha, there is actually a bit more to it then that.

Just because you’re sick of getting “subscribed topic update” emails . . .

I thought all red Deer had was the A&W for passing through it North and the doughnut Mill for passing through it South…

I thought there was an A&W on either side . . .

Well I am sure one thing we can all agree on is that Alberta has wonderful beef.

Way to go province!

I also forgot to mention Edmonton’s high level bridge streetcar.

If anyone comes to town for a visit hit me up. I am a member of the Edmonton Radial Railway society so I’ve got all the streetcar related connections
