My lunch today was delicious, and probably cost about that. I cooked large shrimp, peppers, and onions with cajun seasoning and some fresh parsley, then put it over a mix of steamed rice (mixed brown/white) and riced cauliflower. Fresh eggs for breakfast, grape tomatoes and olives for snack, and a small piece of buffalo-sauced chicken for an emergency snack because I worked out pretty hard this morning. Dinner will be salmon with the same steamed rice, which I make in quantity, and a salad. No labels to read, really, unless just the spice and buffalo sauce. But they’re not making me fat.
Speaking of which, still waiting for the pics, @greenboy! @darnell_becker, do we have photos of you? I should look.
It’s okay, I was the exact same way. Raised on a grill.
You should have seen my father in laws face when he had the first cast iron steak I’d made him. He was genuinely frustrated the entire meal.
Top 5 of my experiences with him. And that’s including the time I watched him crush a joint from some stranger at a concert and go “man that’s a funny tasting cigarette”
Yeah, this is 100%. I’d even say most girls that go to the gym are in their young 20s, tops 25. After that they fall off dramatically. You’ll occasionally see an older 20/early 30 something in there on weekends.
You can find a lot of bros from all age groups though, tons of firefighters and police officers around noon, and such because these days men have to look good while also making money lol to not be “lesser”.
we’ve truly reached the pinnacle of this thread when people are saying cooking steak to quality levels is easy lol. I can’t compete with you all, you guys are the .01% of the gods of this earth.
Seriously, you people… cooking steak that is edible and won’t make you sick is easy. Cooking steak that people go “wow this is amazing” is downright an art form. I’ve had many people try and cook me a good steak… 99% I had to just politely nod and smile.
the issue isn’t just buying it I think, the issue is going back home and cooking. it takes time and energy and a lot of people are gassed by the end of the day. it’s also the fact of how the marketing works, shit food seems more appealing to people, the quantity is bigger, and it’s cheaper.
I can’t imagine generation X - early millennials like most of us had parents that taught us how to cook. It’s a shame, terrible really but that’s the reality of our time. I see it changing, cooking shows, youtube, it’s all helping.
This is why you see girls in their 30s “adulting” totally astonished with themselves for putting together a meal which they then proceed to put on instagram for the world to see “look look I actually made this!”
@greenboy I think many people think eating healthy is expensive is because they don’t know how to make it work. We go to Aldi near our home and on some weeks we can buy the whole weeks worth of food for us and my son for about 125 bucks. Of course sometimes it’s more but that’s likely because of a staple that has to be replaced (eg, olive or other oils, spices, maybe a new kitchen tool).
I lost my taste for eating out. We prepare nearly all our meals and eat our rarely. My wife makes great food, just like her mom. Plus I improved my skills too. Queens is the most diverse borough on the planet (literally) and while I enjoyed the variety while I lived there, I agree with you that many eateries just have sloppy, over-portioned food.
Not only that, but how much would the average American save if they stopped drinking soda? How about Frapamockabullshit at Starbucks.
But eating healthy is expensive. Give me a break.
Edit:
“The per capita consumption of soda drinks, including energy drinks, fell to about 642 8-ounce servings last year, the lowest level since 1985, when the Beverage Digest began tracking consumption trends, the publication said on Wednesday.”
642 8-oz soda’s a year is fucking insanity and that’s a 30-year low, but heaven forbid we buy fruit and vegetables at the grocery store.
Not always the case of them being stupid. Some have almost no access to healthy alternatives. Take low income areas with really high obesity rates for example. Their source often times is a dollar general store.
Now if you have the ability to get healthy and good tasting food easily, but still are a fat shit, then yes, you’re stupid.
I know it’s an exception, but a place called Emporium PA. Nothing particularly wrong with the people there, just way the fuck out there. The local grocer was a dick, and the nearest shopping opportunity was about 40 min. away. Then they got a dollar general.
