Uhm…because we have cars?
I live in a huge fucking city. Obviously you base scale on your surroundings. Anything less than a 20min drive away is what I consider “relatively close”…because everything else is way farther than that.

That’s why we have freeways.
Not just that, but Canada and the US are both in the top 5 in the world in in total geographical area.
Shit here will be a lot more spaced out than it would be in a tiny ass country like New Zealand.

Dude, in Maine, shit that happens up in “the County” is local news (~350 miles away). Not too long ago, I was driving 25 minutes to get groceries. Kids school is 10 miles away.

And let’s not forget logistics. My work is about a 5 minute walk from my house. But I have to drop off/pick up the kids everyday, get groceries now and then, etc.
OK, so how does one find a gym like that? I can’t complain because mine is free right now, but how do I find a gym where heavy weights and big eating are not just encouraged, but practically mandatory?

Dude, in Montana, shit that happens ANYWHERE in the 4th largest state in America is local news (800 miles away). Presently I drive 40 minutes to get groceries. Kid’s school is 29 miles away. Nearest town or city over 1500 people is 86 miles away.
Sums up the rural parts of Texas quite nicely as well.

Go to a local/nearby (or as close as you can get) powerlifting or strongman competition and ask around.

Or by looking the part. I swear I must know every bigger dude in the gym right now…and that is just because like hangs around like. Serious trainers like finding other serious trainers. If you aren’t serious though, I would expect that getting to know people like that will be much harder.
In Houston we have MetroFlex gym and One to One which is where most of those guys can be found if you don’t see any at the local 24 hour fitness.

Might be tough in Montana, but this would be a good place to start:

Clicked on the link and got a kick out of the results…ONE gym listed for the entire state, a state that is 55% the size of the state of Texas (only smaller than Alaska, Texas and only slightly smaller than California).
That’s Montana.
Haha. Figures. I’ve been to Montana once (Glacier National Park). It’s the only state I’ve been to where the authorities actually recommended hitch hiking. Unique place to say the least (in a good way).
I’ve heard about a couple of the places on the NJ list. From what people told me, they’re legit (namely Strong and Shapely and Parisi’s. So finding a gym through that site could workout for those interested.
