Happy Birthday America!

I just saw that thread. Funny we would both reference “frog licking”. Now where the hell is Orion?

To be honest - I’ve missed almost every boat that has landed at my pier for the entirety of my considerably long life. However, I heralded the call of one such signal and it yielded me more financial recompense than I could have ever hoped for.

It has been my goal since then to open my ears and my mind to even the most subtle of voices.

I am humbled in shame that I did not hear yours. My apologies.
So you weren’t exaggerating earlier. You have gotten bigger.

Excuse me, Varqanir, is that a Scout you are holding in the pic? or an M1A?
You just got a helluva lot hotter with that question. Just sayin’.

Yeah. It’s a link to Rush’s website - but this is a speech his father wrote around 50 years ago or so. It talks about what the signers of the DOI endured - how much they sacrificed because of their treasonous action.

Pretty danged sobering.
Indeed. I found and read that article about 15 years ago when I was researching John Hart.

These were remarkable men: they risked all, and in many cases sacrificed all, to reject the rule of their sovereign, and bring about the birth of a new political entity.

I wonder what they would think of their child now that it’s all grown up.
I remember back 5-6 years ago you, me (under a now-silenced screen name) and a couple of other posters developed a map of a new nation that stretched from Washington to the coast of Texas.

I think of that map often. I think of that old-but-new expression of freedom.

I’m glad you’re back.

I remember that thread very clearly. I know it was half tongue-in-cheek and half out of frustration, but that was a helluva fun thread. I still think about that one (more lately in the last little bit).

Oh, and this confirms exactly who you are drunky beyond all doubt haha. Glad I was right!

Ah, well. I guess no serious discussion will ensue until well after the barbecued meat has been digested and the last of the fireworks have been tossed in the water bucket. Guess I’ll go and contemplate the mysteries of how our great nation (America, that is) has come to such a pass.
Alright, alright. What are we celebrating?

 1. For some, the way it could’ve been. But I suppose it would bee a day of mourning, in their case. Done and gone.

 2. For others, a necessary start. But, hey, thank goodness for overdue consideration of economic justice. Time to celebrate.

I’m gonna go with 1.5 on your scale.

There are those who know the failure of the intent of the Originalists, yet pray for some divine intervention to the return of their principals.

And there the younguns who can rise above the cradle-to-grave dependence on the nanny-state governance of today to see the fresh air of true freedom our fore-fathers envisioned.

I can only pray I have enough time and ammunition to breathe the air of true freedom before I die.
It’s hard to be optimistic lately lol. I believe for myself that the 4th was a needed break with close friends to unwind unfortunately, rather than reflection on the state of the Republic. Probably not the best way, but I’m pretty cynical lately and I did require a lot of whisky haha.

I believe that most of the people celebrate the 4th exactly as that–a bbq and fireworks day to be spent with friends, or family. I don’t think that there is anything inherently wrong with that; one could make an argument that in view of our hectic, pell-mell pace in life that a little rebalancing and ‘independence’ from the normal work/grind/consumerism. Unfortunately I don’t think that it is probably not considered in depth that way either.

What do I celebrate? I celebrate the idea of The Experiment. The concept of America, which I unfortunately see waning day by day. I’m too young to be saying “back in my day”, but man there is a difference. I’m not sure how to look at this present day situation, also because it’s super late, but I honor the sacrifices made, to bring the country into being.
