My old guitar teacher used to play classical guitar at a pretty high level. He said that some of the top guys went to pretty insane lengths to maintain their hands (mostly their fingernails). Stuff like learning how to do almost everything with their non-dominant hand etc.
Entire concerts have been called off because of a single broken nail.

Yeah, but at least the guitarist’s hands are PART of his instrument. This man worked hard for many years to master the art of playing it.
