Haiti

My heart aches for those people. I have donated $$, but not sure what else I could do, this is out of my league. The devastation is huge and seemingly insurmountable. The bodies need to be cleaned up and burned asap or the fall out can just get worse. The body count estimates all over the map so we don’t know how bad it is, but this very well could be the worst natural disaster in our life time.

It will take more than money but money is badly needed still, donate if you can.

to the OP, i hear you, it makes national news every time some attractive blond hair blue eyed child from an affluent white family gets abducted, but hundreds if not thousands of minority children goes missing every week and the general public has no idea.
When that white kid disappeared and was to fucking stupid to run away in a public place that made all the headlines.

The litte black girl who gnawed through her restraints went home and watched cartoons was not nearly as big a story, though she was clearly way more awesome.

Which, given the fact that the white kid was not awesome at all was not that much of a feat but still.

Bitch to the racist liberals…Their the ones who run most of the news organizations. However, man this is waaaay beyond race. This is down right apocalyptic.

These guys are a blast ROFLMAO!!! I’ve had a lot of work the last few days which means I sit in my living room which is a computer shop with the TV on. FOX’s coverage has comprised literally 40% or better of every minute since it happened.

That’s ok according to an interview with Pat Robertson I saw on Yahoo he stated that Haiti deserved what they got from the quake from a pact they made with the devil…

And also that since their buildings were run down and in decay that this was a blessing in disguise so the country could rebuild?!

Right…

Neither is spell check. Never the less, how many atheist organizations running out there to help? None? Don’t worry, we’ll get it.
There are a lot of secular organizations engaged in aid relief, and most of them will be in Haiti. A prime example, the Red Cross, which despite its name is not a “Christian” organization, is indeed running out there to help. What’s your point–that atheists like to see people suffer? If that is your point, you are just plain wrong.

Whoa dude. Here’s what he actually said:

“Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it,” Robertson said on his Christian Broadcasting Network show. "They were under the heel of the French . . . and they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, ‘We will serve you if you’ll get us free from the French.’

"True story. And the devil said, ‘OK, it’s a deal,’ " Robertson said. “Ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after another.”

Now you may think he implied “that Haiti deserved what they got from the quake,” but he did not “state” that. You need to straighten up your reporting. You lose credibility here when you purposely misrepresent the facts.
And also that since their buildings were run down and in decay that this was a blessing in disguise so the country could rebuild?!

Right…
I actually thought the same thing when I first saw the devastation. I meant no ill will; I just thought, “Wow, what an opportunity, albeit as a result of a terrible tragedy, for this incredibly destitute country to rebuild its infrastructure and to do it right.”
i heard the Robertson thing today. Thought that was interesting.

I would agree with you, but I think because the devastation has hit the heart of Haiti in port au prince that the country may never recover. Other countries can certainly provide aid, but we can’t replace the hundreds of thousands of people who have died and will continue to perish in the aftermath. I’m not just talking about civilians, the entire countries government, economic structure, and core of the nation has instantly perished. It’s like…holy shit! Because of this, I’m predicting that unless their is an unprecedented amount of international relief Haiti may be doomed to at least many more bad years to come.

Good to know that the U.S. is doing it’s part though, I sincerely hope that everything turns out ok.

This is rhetorical, but what does Robertson mean when he says they swore a pact with the devil? Who are “they” that swore this pact? Surely not the entire nation? Surely not the innocent children whose lives were taken in this disaster. It’s just a stupid thing for Robertson to say in the face of such horrific suffering.

Your monitor doesn’t have enough room for the zeros that would be necessary to enumerate the foreign relief aid this country has given to the rest of the world. Probably more per capita than the next 10 combined. You say that like you’re surprised.

It is stupid from your worldview, not his.
Remember, he truly believes in the truth of “and the sins of their fathers…”

And regardless of his true views, I am certain that he and his followers will take action to help in many ways.

Oh, and in response to your original question, while Roman Catholicism is considered the official religion of Haiti, Voodoo (and its Creole variations) is truly thought of as the national religion.

How can you tell?? Thats not at all what I meant, the u.s. historically gives very large sums of money for relief. I believe proportionately we do give less than other developed nations in terms of our wealth however. I believe thats a well documented statistic, but it’s irrelevant. I’m just very happy that we’ve done our part in a timely manner despite our domestic issues and our rather obvious need for cash. That’s all.

Look, this is a profound subject and a tad bit difficult to discuss in depth on a forum like this one. BUT there is no doubt that the basic concept of “actions bring consequences” is a valid one and those consequences are not always strictly limited to the original perpetrators of the actions.

This is true for the entire human race not just the Haitians.
He later expanded on the statement putting dates in a press release. He was specifically talking about the 1791 slave revolt that won the slaves their freedom (that damned devil gave black people freedom shame on him!).

All sarcasm aside in the context the statement was made, he stated earlier that they would be sending relief (see Push I’ll give credit) but following it up with the talk that 1/2 the island is cursed is just wrong. It didn’t need to be brought up at this point. If he wants to beat this drum great (and I guess you can when you “OWN” the network it was on). But even Pat Buchanan came out and said the comments went a little too far to early. Get them the aid they need in order to bury the loved ones first…

I’m not one to argue that it is a third world country, yeah shit isn’t built right. But I would equal it to me looking a Mother and Father who live in a slummed out house that just burnt to the ground, while all of their family is either dead or missing and saying “Well it’s a blessing you can at least rebuild the house!”

This may seem harsh but sometimes the comments on the stupid talking box just don’t come out right.

It darn sure wouldn’t seem harsh or insensitive if a charitable donor walked up to Mother and Father while they were looking at their burnt ruins of a house and said, “Mother and Father, I can barely imagine the depth of your despair but I’d like to let you know that several of us have gotten together, taken up a collection, and come up with the money, materials and labor to rebuild your house for you, bigger and better than before. We are here to help you in your time of need.”

See, even you twisted things around when you said, “Well it’s a blessing YOU (emphasis mine) can at least rebuild the house!” That’s a unrepresentative analogy because you know good and well the Haitian people are NOT going to rebuild their infrastructure and buildings and residences. The world (principally the United States of America) is going to do it for them.
Maybe not all Haitian people are the same?
