Ignorance is bliss.

It won’t happen in your life time…but eventually, China will burst at the seams as far as population growth and America will be much like China is now. We will eventually fuck this planet up. The average person can’t even control themselves when it comes to throwing trash out a window. We just fucked up tons of aquatic life in the Gulf of Mexico…and none of that is the worst that can happen.

I know I’ve said it before, but I really think the movie Wall-E is a great representation of what is ahead for us…so yeah, finding that alternate planet may not save YOUR life or even affect the lives of your kids or theirs…but it likely will affect the kids those kids have.

Waiting until it is too late to even look around is fucking stupid.

The human race isn’t about one specific individual. In the grand scheme of things, our lives are nearly insignificant…therefore, the human race and its survival as whole matters most.

Think about it…if an asteroid the size of Texas hit Earth next week…the universe wouldn’t even know we existed or give a shit.

That is how much we matter right now.[/quote]
I wouldnt call making a joke response to an internet thread ignorance but some might.

Also, I wouldnt be worried about the Earth becoming so overcrowded that we need a new planet. The Earths population will wipe itself out via nuclear war way before that happens. And we will have a nuclear war in our lifetime\

I do believe it’s time for someone to step away from both the tv and computer for a little while.

I know it is a video game…but I liked Assassin’s Creed attempt to make it seem as if the Earth had been heavily inhabited millions of years before we acknowledge it…but that the world was destroyed save for a few who rebuilt the population (something like a Noah’s arc story long before Noah could have existed.

Whatever you choose to believe, it is likely that eventually, if humans survive, we will need a new place to stay or at least a few new subdivisions…whether that be because of pollution, scarce resources or all out nuclear war.

I think thats a very likely scenario… shit getting whipped out and then a very small (compared to our current population) group of people would have to rebuild. I think it is very likely to happen. If it wasnt for our current levels of technology/medicine some of this natural “population control” (for lack of a better term) would be happening right now.

Look at all of the tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes, volcanos and other natural disasters that have happened lately which killed tons of people. Imagine the impact they would have had if we didnt have the current level of medicine/technology that is being used to help these people.

Also, it is highly likely that no matter the disease or virus, if there ever were some large scale infection that could wipe us out, some humans will no doubt be immune to it.

That was the whole underlying plot of Stephen King’s The Stand.

Nuclear war may happen, but unless the entire world is vaporized, chances are some humans may survive…and then eventually fuck shit up again.

This is totally true… as a whole we are becoming stupider by the minute… things are made with “”(forgot the term… like tvs/cell phones they break you throw them away or replace them). People don’t understand how the majority of the things they use even work… sooner or later it will catch up to us. Wall-e will become a reality at least imo sometime in the distant future.

You’re all forgetting that if we can’t colonize the moon, Mars, or this other planet by December 21, 2012, we’re fucked anyway…that’s the day of the great cosmic alignment that’s supposed to cause a polar shift and make scenes from the movie 2012 come to life.

Even if we somehow manage to avoid complete destruction of ourselves or our planet, our very own sun will eventually force us to leave and re-locate

And though I say “us,” there’s basically 0.00% chance that Homo sapiens will represent the dominant, sentient life at that point

Just thought I should throw this in here…

It’s quite important for this discussion (everything is fucked up, it’s about to get even worse, and here is a possible solution, if only the world population were desperate enough to turn their backs on current economics).

People have thought this for a long time. But with greater population comes more innovation and solutions to potential problems. Many population theorists thought like you, I’d look up people like Malthus and Durkheim, it really makes the fears we have over shit like this seem silly.

As long as they keep ignoring space exploration (and reducing funding to do so), it’ll probably be too late for us to get anywhere.

Not that it’ll affect us in our lifetimes.

LOL… I should start planning on how to capitalize from this “catastrophic event”, I missed out on the Y2K bug because I was too young and naive but I’ll be ready this time.

Has France surrendered to this planet yet?

This is extremely interesting we don’t know yet what the chemical composition of the planet is, we will probably have that relatively soon. We don’t know, however, if that planet has a magnetic field, or an atmosphere, both of which are necessary for supporting life AS WE KNOW IT. However, life is remarkably resilient, and, if the chemical composition of the planet is right, than we may indeed find some form of life there. The tidally locked scenario is interesting. Life there would be singularly adapted to it, of course, but any Terran colonists would need artificially controlled lighting to maintain a sleep schedule. Couple that with the fact that changing weather patterns are probably radically different that ours, as one side of the planet it under constant light and heat, and you get a very neat scenario. Now we just need to figure out how to cross the 20 light year distance between us (quite neighborly by the standards of space), and visit.

There have been estimates that many other planters exist in this galaxy on the “goldilocks zone”, right near the triple point of water. I am truly interested in the findings of the new Kepler Space Telescope, which is surveying space now looking for many more habitable planets. I anticipate results within 5-8 years.
