well, I’ve had a bit of a breakthrough.
It seems that psyllium husk fibre at 2 tbsp a day has done more for stool quality than all the digestive enzymes, betaine HCL, FOS, glutamine and probiotics combined.
Little bit annoying tbh. I mean, obviously it’s good that I seem to be improving, but could it really be that simple? That I just needed more insoluble fibre?
I guess it’s possible. I eat a TON of veggies but as I understand it they mostly provide soluble fibre, so I guess it could still be possible that I needed more insoluble fibre…
I dunno. I’m going to continue on with probiotics, glutamine and inulin, as well as the psyllium. Not going to bother with the HCL because frankly it’s a pile of wank.
How’s everyone else getting on?[/quote]
Rds that’s interesting.I eat alot of veggies as well and never thought about adding psyllium in.Is the poo more solid, formed etc.and are you having the 2TBLsp at dinner time.HA love us grown men talking about are poops,to funny.

That’s awesome, and I think it can be that simple.

heh, yeah it’s not a conversation I often have with people!
But yeah man they are pretty much perfect now. Whereas before they were looser than hell they are solid unbroken logs now. I’m wiping for about 30 seconds now whereas before it was a case of “well better get settled in, this could take a while”
It has to be the psyllium that’s done it, as it literally started helping the next day.
I take a tablespoon with my last two meals of the day. Seems to be doing the trick.

it just seems funny because I was already eating so much in the way of fruit and veg.
I guess some people just need more fibre than others.

I don’t think this is a hijack at all! If the goal is to really understand what is happening with gut health, I think taking in to account the role of the nervous system and feedback loops etc. is crucial. Good find!

what makes it really interesting is that dannyrat posted above that increasing insoluble fiber causes him more discomfort, and I’ve experienced the same thing - increased bloating and gas (probably from fermentation) from insoluble fiber like psyllium, but much improved symptoms when I go hard on green veg. I think one of the big take aways from this thread is that there is no “magic bullet” for gut health, you have to be open to trial and error and experimentation to find the answer.

yeah I think you’ve got the money post right there.
So weird that we can all have pretty much the same symptoms, yet treat them in a totally different way.

The book seems good (I have it but haven’t got round to reading it all, yet)
As you guys said, many diverse issues have the same symptoms. Trial and error, my friends

that was a great little summary of the different facets of gut health. Y’all should definitely read it
I’m doing better than I was but I’ve really changed my eating/drinking habits. It’s still a work in progress. I may add in some psyllium husk to see what happens but for the most part I’ve got 1-2 BM a day going on. I upped my vitamin C a little too last night/today so i’ve got a little bit of the runs going on but that is a fluke anyway.

make sure you drink a ton of water with the psyllium. It apparently swells to like 50 times the size when water hits it

Uhh, well good luck then.
Might as well post this here, since I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere else in the thread. Caffeine and other stimulants can wreck absolute havoc with digestive health - if you use a lot of stims/pre workout supps etc., that is probably as good of a place as any to start in terms of elimination.
A-rod - read the article above that rds commented on, see if anything in that rings a bell, it provides a pretty good over view of what’s going on at a basic level with several different typical digestive problems.
But damn I consume ridonkulous amounts of caffeine. I love coffee.
I take DAA, Beta Alanine and Creatine along with half a bottle of Ab Performance NO speed Stack which is sold at the front of the gym. I swear that thing is poison in a bottle but I just can’t quite it. It really gets me going.
Ahh quitting coffee will suck.
I had this plan tell me what you all think.
Do a colon cleanse because for whatever reason I feel like a colon cleanse will bring me to a “blank slate” if you will.
Slowly introduce a variety of food. Right after the colon cleanse eat only food that is very unlikely to cause digestive problems/ bloating.
This to me seems like the easiest path.
Anyways side note. I think you all might find this funny. My dad on a continual bases breaks my balls and is telling me I look great accept for my stomach. Constantly telling me to focus on abdominal workouts. I literally end up screaming that it is digestive issues and not fucking inadequate exercising because I am not fat. He then accuses me of being a hypochondriac.
The acidity in coffee and not even the caffeine can sometimes be the culprit. That doesn’t mean you have to quit drinking coffee, just try finding higher pH coffee or a coffee from lowlands like sumatra. Your highland coffees are the most acidic and lends to its taste profile as well.
A-rod - I kind of figured it was a joke, but still, point stands. I don’t think a colon cleanse would hurt anything, but I’m not at all convinced that it would really help either. I think an elimination diet + attention to the relation of stress to digestive problems is probably crucial to dealing with IBS type symptoms (constant bloating and shitting).
Also keep in mind, that not only can caffeine fuck up digestive health all on it’s own - but it also increases output of stress hormones which could throw you in to a serious feed back loop of twitchy gut nervous shitting. Creatine has never bothered me, but I’ve heard different from others - especially if you aren’t drinking enough water. I don’t have any experience with DAA and Beta Alanine to comment on those - but I would definitely recommend keeping any stims to an absolute minimum when trying to sort out a digestive issue.
A distended gut can definitely make you look fat - I’m not nearly as lean as I want to be, but I don’t have a visible belly with a shirt on, however if my guts are all messed up I’ll take on a lot of visible swelling in the abdomen and look generally softer and shittier. I think this probably becomes even more of an issue the leaner you get.

Yeah, I should have mentioned this - and I guess beyond coffee, acid balance is probably something that’s going to come up for people. I certainly know folks who can’t eat really acidic foods with out side effects, and a lot of coffees can be quite acidic. As far as energy drinks and that sort of thing, most of those are complete devil’s piss loaded with enough acidic compounds to dissolve coins or something.
Ok. I think I have gathered all the advice I can. Thanks ATG and everyone who provided input. Time to put all this talk into action. I am going to start that food log try to eliminate one thing at a time. I will report back in a couple weeks if you all are still here.
Also good luck to everyone else in dealing with this.
