According to the US Justice Department, 1.5 million Kilograms of illegal drugs were seized along the borders in 2009. There were certainly more that got through, but we don’t need to speculate, cause we’ve already moved from tons to millions. A Glock pistol weighs less than a kilogram. So that would literally be millions of guns, if they wanted to smuggle guns.
There is already a trade in illegal guns within this country that numbers in the millions. So there is already a demand that smugglers could meet.
What else did you say? Oh yeah, some nonsense about correlation. Criminals are already armed. If you could wave your magic wand and get rid of all of the guns in this country, criminals could quickly re-arm with guns smuggled over the southern border.
I’m pretty sure you’re just trolling at this point, and I’m very sure that I’ve wasted enough time discussing this with you. Have a nice day!
Just spewing a little… I keep seeing these “walkouts” going on at schools and it’s (for lack of a better term) retarded. These things reek of occupy wall street. No one knows why they are there or why they are doing what they are.
“We are protesting gun violence.” That doesn’t make sense. Everyone is against gun violence. That’s like saying “we are protesting rape” or “we are protesting child abuse.” Is there some kind of State requirement for gun violence that I’m not aware of that we need to assemble and renounce? Everyone has gotten so chronically driven by emotion that they have lost the ability to reason. The word protest has been bastardized to mean anytime someone is upset they just hold up a sign and that equals “fighting for (fill in the blank).” They conjure up images of MLK or Ghandi and believe in their hearts that they are somehow similar, when the reality is they are mockeries of civil disobedience. (More directed at modern “movements” than the high school kids.)
At my daughter’s school they won’t be walking out. Instead, they are staying inside and talking about the issues.
The school where my wife teaches is in the ghetto. Most of those kids are planning on walking out only because it’s a way to get out of class. The admin wants teachers to accompany them to monitor them which pissed my wife off because it just snowed, it’s cold and it’s the ghetto.
I couldn’t agree more. Nothing dumber than protesting something that is already held in great disdain by all but a very small number of psychopaths.
Like a school shooter in the shadows is going to go, ‘You know, I really wanted to pop a cap in ass of a bunch of school kids, but they don’t seem to like it so I am not going to do it now.’
I said it earlier and I will say it again. Guns have always been readily available and people didn’t do this kind of shit. People need to change. Society needs to change, get it’s priorities in order.
This post-modernist “It’s all about me and whatever is wrong with me is someone else’s fault” shit ain’t working. This one parent working 10 jobs to support the kids cause dad walked out for a different piece of ass, shit needs to stop. The break down in the family unit and kids left to their own druthers shit needs to stop. This treating school like free daycare shit needs to stop.
We need to love more and hate less. It sounds corny, but it’s the reality.
Mother Teresa once was quoted as saying that America is the poorest country she’s ever been in, not for lack of money, but for the incredible lack of love she witnessed. I am paraphrasing, but it was something to that effect.
I don’t have a problem with protests. I believe in freedom after all, as we all should. It doesn’t matter if I don’t agree with the protesters on the issue. But a vague message of gun violence makes no sense.
I remember when inner city leaders and pastors were planning a march against violence and they wanted their route to pass through the neighboring suburb. People there actively tried to stop it. The news interviewed one guy who said that no one from his town is going into the city to kill people so why are they marching here.
We have bets on which ones are going to be in jail the fastest. When I help out in her class, I put that Psychology degree to work. I can tell who’s violent, who’s going to be gay, who’s parents are pretty much absent in their lives and who are likely abused…
We’re dealing with elementary kids. She had a kid last year that murdered a cat, just to see what it would do. It’s not a far stretch to us to think he’ll be a unsuccessful serial killer… Unsuccessful, because unlike a lot of serial killers this kid is a moron.
I cannot speak for your experiences, or your wife’s. But in our case, school policies at least in elementary schools do not seem unfair to me. The kids are just worse. But they are worse because of their home lives, not their school lives. A good number of kids rather be at school than at home, which is a sad statement.
However, if a student starts throwing chairs or turning over desks, that kid has got to go. If they stab my wife with a pencil because they are mad, they got to go, if they run out of the room forcing the entire administration to give chase, they got to go.
If anything, the bigger problem is too much gets unreported. They will doll out the discipline, but not do the paper work so that the school does not look as bad as it is. However, this has bit them in the ass before.
The cat killer had to be removed from the school, to go to an EBD school, finally, after 3 years. The school district psychologist read the admin the riot act about the lack of documentation on the kid…
I am painting a ugly picture. The whole picture, I love most of the kids, they are really sweet. They all want hugs and they want to play with my hair. They all want to sit on my lap when I read them books.
The only kid I want to throw through the wall is clinically ADHD. If you have never seen it in action, it’s something else… I mean, wow. If you put this kid in a strait jacket and strap him to a chair bolted to the ground, he would still manage to reap destruction. Somehow, someway he would figure it out…
Things go unreported because higher ups want to see fewer arrests, expulsions and suspensions. This keeps the worst kids, the kids who rob the good kids of an education, in school. It affects inner city schools more than suburban schools. Inclusive education negatively affects urban schools more than suburban schools. Once a kid gets labeled special Ed he has certain federal protections which give him more freedom and rights than general Ed students.
It’s racist because it hurts inner city kids more since they have more special Ed students. I’ve seen kids whose IQs were probably close to 80 in classes that were designed to prepare them for college. They aren’t going to college. That’s reality yet they are allowed to have a negative impact on kids who can go to college all in the name of not hurting their feelings. And these policies hurt poor kids more. I worked in an elementary school in which 25% of the students were special Ed. How are general Ed students supposed to learn when 7 or 8 students out of a classroom of 30 are disruptive, and the teacher has to tolerate it because it is a manifestation of a disability, or taking up a disproportionate amount of instruction time (and still not learning).
As far as gun policy, has the rise in school shootings coincided with inclusive education? I forgot where I read this but a 20 year old high school student threatened to shoot other students. He can’t be expelled because, as a special Ed student, he is federally protected from expulsion. So he has to have an escort now.
And I’m not trying to say kids with disabilities are bad. It’s that in the inner cities they label any kid with a behavior issue as special ed so instead of making the child and his family work to fix the issue, they make it so the kid gets a free pass.
Many kids with genuine cognitive problems shouldn’t be in general ed classes either however I’m not saying that they are all going to be school shooters but, when you look at Adam Lanza and this latest kid it’s clear they had some cognitive issues. If they were in a more controlled environment with specialists maybe those who have the potential to be mass shooters would be recognized at a young age and dealt with accordingly.
I like the “walk up” concepts that’s been floating around social media. You walk up to a kid that’s by himself. You have lunch with the kid that usually eats by himself. So on and so forth.
My school had something like this. It was called “Challenge day” where bullies/bullied would all hug it out.
End result was a week of leaving the nerds alone, then business as usual.
I like walk up concepts, but it’s good to remember the kids that are outcasts are such for a reason that their peers already decided on. A lunch session doesn’t really change anything.
I would certainly agree that under reporting is hurtful to the school population at large, but it’s actually not a policy, it’s people trying to cover their asses by not following policy.
I cannot say it’s deliberately racist to want your school to appear better on paper. It’s certainly hurtful to the education of non-disruptive students to leave these disruptive kids in a normal classroom when they clearly do not belong there.
But it’s not just schools doing this. The parents are more culpable because they just don’t give a shit what their kid does or does not do so long as they don’t stand in the parent’s way. Notes go home, unsigned, unlooked at.
Then when the parents realize their child is failing everything they blame the teachers and accuse them of all kinds of horrible things, because their 'little angel hung the moon and is far superior to all other children and therefore could not possibly be culpable for their own behavior, it’s the teahcer’s\ schools fault.
Teaching is a horrible career. I couldn’t do it. I teach adults, because I teach a class on the products I work on to customers. I leave those classes exhausted. I couldn’t teach kids, especially when it takes just 1 kid to cause a train wreck in classroom much less 7.
Teachers are given all of the responsibility and none of the tools to dole out punishments that need to be doled out. Some kids need their asses beaten, WELL. Most of all these kids need to be in alternate behavior dysfunction classrooms and not with general population. But it takes an act of congress to move a kid.
