Gun Policy in the USA

Are they a protected class? We already have laws regarding drinking age. Car rental businesses have age restrictions.

And isn’t the cake ruling the opposite of what we see here? The court ruled to “violate” the baker’s freedom of religion.

I’m not sure if “young people” even qualifies as a class tbh.

Imo the cake ruling is “you can’t discriminate based on orientation” whereas the gun one will eventually be “you can’t discriminate based on age.”

Age even seems easier to defend than orientation, given how much Jesus is still in politics

If the whole gay wedding cake bakery incident taught us anything the answer is a big fat nope.

Edit: @pfury beat me to it.

There are already laws around age discrimination. But that’s more so you can’t fire someone because they’re 58. Don’t know how it will work here.

Dicks never has good deals anyway.

You can’t discriminate based on age. I’m not sure how car rentals get around that other than perhaps it hasn’t been challenged?

The court ruled that the baker couldn’t be compelled to bake a cake for a specific event, but couldn’t refuse to sell a cake already produced that was displayed for sale.

Dicks doesn’t make “assault” rifles to order as far as I know.

I see the cake ruling as saying you can’t use freedom of religion to discriminate against a protected class.

Dick’s is not violating anyone’s 2A rights as that only applies to the government. Car rental businesses can discriminate based on age. The government even discriminates as it passed drinking age laws.

I prefer Cabelas, personally.

Hmmmm. Not a take I’d fight tooth and nail against. That’s probably something along the lines of what dicks defense will inevitably be, but I still forsee them losing

Pro tip. Go to a local gun shop, the smaller the better. Ask if they offer lay-away. If they do ask if there are any guns where the lay-away got abandonded. Sometimes people move away, lose jobs or go to prison and can’t complete the lay-away. The laws are different in every state, but in PA the shop owner has to make 3 attempts to contact the abandoned lay-away before they can keep the cash and resell the gun to another consumer.

That’s how I got a $700 Ruger Redhawk in 44 mag for $100.

if not legally, financially…especially in certain parts of the country - want to open up a sporting goods store near a Dick’s?

Oh, I’ve only ever bought a firearm from a local shop. I just meant for outdoorsy stuff.

I have a small gun shop about a half mile from my house and the prices are pretty good.

Their bean counters probably figured it all out beforehand.

I don’t think this has anything to do with the 2A, but is potentially discrimination based on age. As @Basement_Gainz pointed out, age discrimination law relates to hiring practices, but I would be surprised if it doesn’t or wouldn’t apply to sales in a similar fashion as the cake sale.

Don’t be so sure. I live like 15 miles from their corporate HQ. They are ALWAYS hiring Finance staff. I knew one of their old CFO’s, he said it was the worst place to work he’d ever been. They churn people all day.

But doesn’t apply to alcohol purchases?

…so you’re saying you’re in? Awesome!!

On a more anecdotal note - I’ve worked with Dick’s people in the past - I can’t speak for their bean counters, but their operations left a lot to be desired.

In what?

You’re almost as bad as Zep … if you’re going to respond to a post, know what you’re responding to lol

There is already a specific law(s) in place in that case, though. As far as I know, most state law requires a person to be 18 not 21 to buy a rifle. MD is still 18 I believe. So, I can see it being a violation in those states.

I also think the cake ruling (it was a district court iirc for what that’s worth) opens Pandora’s box so to speak as far as when business’ can and cannot refuse service under the law.

Obviously, at the end of the day, this would need to be challenged in court and I’m not sure a lot of lawyers will want to take this on for 18-21 year olds, which I think is the same case for alcohol and probably car rentals.

Maybe your question should make sense with regard to the post you quoted.
