Grilling Season is On!!

OK, screw it. Let’s talk about grilling because I am about to move and plan to upgrade to a grill big enough to cook about 15 steaks without it taking the 3-4 hours it takes me right now.

What size grill can I get without spending over 300 bucks and is propane the better option?[/quote]

Did you buy your house already? Some of the newer ones have a gas line outside
which you can hook up a grill to…especially in the “grilling/barbecuing” areas. We just
bought one in Oklahoma and it had this amenity. Makes life quite easy. Of course if you bought
a house already then this is useless : )

Sam’s Club has Kingsford on sale at $14 for two 20 pound bags. Meijer was selling 16 pound bags for $7.50

The Easter turkey. It’ll be done in about 30 minutes, then rest for 30 minutes and carve. This one weighs about 15 pounds, but I’ve cooked turkeys up to 28 pounds on the BBQ. Turkey cooked on the BBQ is really superior - the breast meat doesn’t dry out.

Cook the turkey using indirect heat - place a foil pan filled with water, large enough to catch the drippings, right on the briquettes. Place the turkey on a rack on top of the grill rack, over the foil pan. I coat the turkey with a mix of olive oil, paprika, smoked paprika, black pepper and sea salt.

The BBQ, a Broil King Sovereign, is natural gas hooked up to the house supply. It’s about 15 years old. I’ve had to rebuild it with new parts a couple of times, but the current replacement is about $800 Canadian, so I’ll keep this one going forever if I can.

Just got a 1.5 lb porterhouse cut the fillet away from it and grilled the strip and butter fried the fillet with some oyster mushrooms.

So, anyone have any luck with a sub $300 gas grill? I went to home depot, Lowes, and 2 mom and pop grill stores and it seems like if you’re not spending $300 and up your pretty much getting a piece of shit that won’t last 3 years. Pretty much every review online supports this. Do you guys concur?

I ended up buying a piece of shit $15 charcoal grill while I shop around.

I am picking up CharBroil grill off of craigslist for $50 tonight after work. This will at least hold me over until I can get something better.

I have a bunch of flank steak and chicken thighs I need to cook tonight. I am excited!!!

After a couple weeks of searching since this thread I stumbled on an awesome deal at Sears. I got this grill: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_07116644000P?keyword=kenmore+4+burner for $135 after tax. It took some arguieng with a couple managers but I pulled it off. 4 burners, nice heavy grates and enough cooking area to get shit done. It’s my 1st gas grill and after firing it up for the 1st time last night, I’ll never go back to charcoal again. The convenience can’t be beaten and the food still tastes great.

^What were you arguing to get the price down?

I found a great deal on a lower 3 burner model on www.slickdeals.net (great site) for $125+tax. So I bought it online, pickup at a Sears store option. I get there and they had no more left even though I got an email saying it was ready and I called the store to confirm. They offered me a refund, but I argued that I drove 30 minutes and borrowed a truck so I wasn’t going home empty handed. They offered me the newer version of the 3 burner grill and I accepted ($299 sale price). When it was time to load the newer grill into my truck, they didn’t have it. I was pissed off at this point and that’s when they offered me the $399 4 burner. It’s white, but for $135 I could care less.

Is that what they mean by ‘Vanilla’ in that ad? hahaha.

My cheap CharBroil is awesome. It’s small, I can fit maybe 6 steaks at once, but it gets the job done. Well worth the price (even though I forgot to check the grease trap before loading into my SUV!!!)

lol, yep. She asked me if white was OK. I told her at that price she can give me hot pink for all I care.

I want to bump this.

My grill seems to only really cook at 2 heats, too hot or too cold. Too hot, grill catches fire and tends to burn the meat before fully cooked inside. Too cold, meat doesn’t really cook very well. I am trying to find a remedy for this, but so far I have been unsuccessful. I probably need a better grill…

Anyway, I jsut wanted to recommend a sauce. Kraft HOT BBQ sauce. I put this on some pork chops with the intent on eating a couple and saving the rest for work. I ended up scarfing down 2lbs of pork chops b/c it tasted so good…

Charcoal puts out great, even heat but w/ propane you can grill every meal everyday - if you have a good grill.
“Good Grill” means heat and heat retention that means enough btu’s and cast iron to hold them.

-At least 15,000 btu per burner -If you go 18,000 btu burners you will cut your pre-heat time in half and you can throw a 2 inch steak on there in ten minutes. 15k will sear anything you throw on there but If you want to grill for breakfast and lunch spend the extra coin for the 18k burners.

-Cast iron and a good hood. If you don’t have heat retention you have to keep the burners too high and you can’t use thicker cuts. You also can’t sear meat very well at all- there is a reason they make branding irons out of iron and not stainless steel. Cast iron also means very little make-up time so you can re-load the grill in half the time and still get a good sear.

A good propane grill w/ iron will pretty much clean itself because of the heat it generates and you just brush it w/ a grill brush when it’s hot. Seriously the iron turns white hot and you brush the shit off and that’s it. There is no grease or grime leftover and if there is it will be gone the next time you fire it up and brush it down.

Don’t fuck around. Gte 18,000 btu per burner and get cast iron.

I have a Beefeater Discovery Series 4 burner grill I got for about $800 http://www.beefeaterbarbecues.com/. It’s a big grill- much bigger than I need for everyday, but very handy when there’s peeps over. You can load that thing up with 15 sirloins or 20 filets no problem and it puts out enough heat to use cast iron pans on it also. i make steak and eggs for breakfast in 15 minutes start to finish. The thing is built really well and has been outside on my porch in Vermont for 6 years. I replaced the ignition once and replaced 1/2 the grill surface once. Parts are very easy to get.

I am seriously considering getting one of these when I get enough money.

Hey guys for right now should I get a charcoal grill or just go for a gas grill? and which one is a good one (either charcoal or gas)?

12 pounds of ribeye - grilling season is back on.

X I get propane from the local Ace Hardware store, not sure that’s a nationwide chain but your local hardware store would probably have it.

Lanky - You got to go with Tenderloin, covered in Montreal Steak Spice, good shit man.

Wait a fucking second.

Are you cutting the fat off a ribeye?

Dude, just buy a different cut if you don’t like flavor. Damn.
