Grettiron's Training Log

I’m always really surprised when I read how little you weigh because you look so big in pictures. Why do you have so much trouble with your weight?
In the past it was probably to do with unhealthy guts but now-a-days they seem to be pretty much healed. At this point I just don’t really know how to proceed and don’t care enough to sort thru all the BS out there.

Maybe when I start my new life in MN next month I’ll give it another go. It would be kind of cool to get a reaction out of my woman when we finally get together again after the move.

Damn, I can’t imagine having to deal with some kind of chronic intestinal issue. Sounds terrible. How are you eating now? What kinds of foods and all that.

It was terrible. I generally avoid gluten but these days it seems I can have white bread or Bud Light once a week or so without any troubles. I eat eggs, cheese, steak, whey, malto, coconut oil, lettuce, salmon, white rice, honey, almonds, sunflower seeds, grapefruit, blueberries, red wine, and sometimes buckwheat. Supps are BCAA’s, creatine, fish oil, multivitamin, vitamin D. Gatorade goes in the workout shakes with some of the other stuff. Generally have sushi on most weekends with wheat-free soy sauce. Lots of black coffee as well haha.

edit: also no milk without some digestive enzymes first.

Not saying that’s a good way to eat, but that is what I eat. My weight is creeping up though… about 181 these days, up from 178. Always weighing after lifting at the gym… my bodyweight is almost incredibly stable so I feel comfortable saying a 3lb increase is legit gain and not daily fluctuation.

Those are some good SLDLs!

Gain 40 lbs and you’ll hit that 455 SB… hahaha
ROFL 10lbs seems unattainable, nevermind 40. I did it to a high box last week but the attempt sans box was a little different.
Eat more veggies. Seriously. I am eating less calories right now than I was and am still gaining weight. Kale and various other greens are your friends!

I don’t see anything wrong with how you’re eating except maybe more vegetables. Seems like you just have to eat more. And that’s the hard part…lol

Alright, I’m having a big big bowl of a variety of lettuces from the garden in honor of both recommendations haha

Tue 7/12

warm up: LAX ball work, foam roll hammys, back raise, shrugs, cleans, presses, snatches

clean and press
95,115,135,155x5, 175,195x3, 205x1,1 (blast), mil press: 135x9
pullups - stupid foam-handled angled bars off the cable machine
BWx2x10, 45,70x5, 90,100x3, 115x2,2, 70x10

snatch
95,115x5, 135x3,3
chinup
BWx4x10

arm stuff

stretch

Hamstrings were pretty shot from yesterday and it may have affected the clean + press. For 205, after the first rep I kept pushing the bar up and forward when attempting rep #2 instead of up and back. Oh well. Chinups were good despite using the handles I hate.

Heading west on Thursday to look for housing. Might be able to get a session or two in next week but then again maybe not. Thanks for the comments guys. The feedback is sometimes thought provoking and always welcome.

More beef! More salmon! More veggies!

mon 7/25

warm up: lots of foam rolling, SLDL, walking lunges

sumo dl
225,315x5, 405x2, 455x1, (belt) 455x1, 495x1

walking lunge
40x40, 60,80,100x20
calf raise
superset

ab/adductor machine
3x10-ish
leg curl/extension
3x10-ish

super stretching

Sumo felt pretty good and considering I’ve been basically sedentary for a week I think this is not bad. Set up like normal with my feet ducked out pretty far and then rotated about the heels until my toes pointed forward. This gave me a lot more power off the floor I think. 495 was slow but there didn’t feel like any sticking points like would happen if my feet were ducked out. Good stuff. Really felt it in the hips and glutes. Walking lunges hit the adductors and glutes really hard.

I think things need a little tweaking. Gonna try alternating RDL-on-box/front squat with sumo DL/walking lunge. Hopefully my ass isn’t sore tomorrow lol.

Another convert to the feet forward army!

I’m sold!

wed 7/27

warm up: rolling, shrug, clean, muscle snatch, press

bench
135,185,225,225, 255x1, 275x1, (AVG PMS) 275,315,335x3, 355x0, (PMS off) 225x5 paused
inverted row
superset

chain pushup
4 strip sets, 1 BW set
HS DY row
superset

DB lateral raise/flye/rear delt flye
4x10 or so

stretch

Sooooo interesting story behind that 355x0. But first, 275 raw was smooth and 335x3 with the PMS was smooth and a PR. Almost tweaked something in my shoulder warming up, but I started holding the inverted rows at the top again and the tweak went away (tho it’s a little tender now). Chain pushups were great for an awesome chest pump.

Video of 275 and 335x3 pms:

On 355 something happened and the bar drifted toward my head. Once out of the groove it plummeted to my upper chest and rolled onto my neck. That was a unique sensation. Certainly felt longer than the second or so you see in the video. It was somewhat peaceful actually and I was very aware that it was crushing my neck and cutting off blood flow. My spotter is a great guy with a 315 press himself, but 355 would probably have been a deadlift PR for him. As you can see there was total chaos when one end of the bar was lifted. Clearly we were not prepared for catastrophic rep failure. In the future, side spotters may be necessary.

Clusterfuck:

That was absolute pandemonium and chaos. lol. Maybe you’ll make it on gymidiots so the uneducated can laugh at you because they don’t know what you’re doing?

Seriously though, glad you’re fine.

x2. That was scary. This is why, when I bench outside of the garage gym, I usually set up in the power rack with the pins in.

Thanks for the well wishes guys. Maybe the vid will attract trolls! Not sure how I feel about that haha. The power rack would be the way to go for sure but the pins just aren’t in the right place in these racks.

benching looked good except for the 355 lol. that was weird, i don’t think i’ve seen a raw bench end up like that. again, glad there was no injury. i’m curious, is there a reason you don’t take a lift off? oh and hows the relocation going?

Oh geez… Gotta pick your spotters based on their deadlifts!

I’ve dumped the bar the other way once, but never on the neck. On a PR attempt one time my wrists just sort of buckled and I dumped 275 right onto my ribs.

Yeah when are you gonna come to the humble Ames, IA weightclub?

Oh and Scoops, since when is the PMS a raw bench?

damnit jake…ok i’ll rephrase that, i haven’t seen a non-shirted bench end up like that. is that better?! ur such a raw nazi hahahaha

Yeah man, it just slipped out of the groove and before I knew it, the bar was on me. Probably should have taken a lift off… 335 went so well I figured I’d be alright. Clearly that was not the case!

It’s going. I should be heading out there for good sometime after August 15th. Do you and jakerz squat on the same day?
