Doubt smashes this one as does Slumdog Millionaire
Although i have yet to see Gran Torino and have no base for comparison, but Doubt was plain old boring. Sure there was good acting in the movie, but i seriously contemplated getting up and leaving.
I saw the Broadway play Doubt; it was a snore of a play. You could not pay me to endure it again. I hope the movie is better. We are going out to see Grand Torino or Benjamin Button right now

when i was pushing doubt i was speaking from an acting perspective. it wasn’t an action movie by any means
Really? You guys have pretty low standards. I was all excited to see it, went Friday night, could have spent 90-odd minutes far better. B-/C+ movie. Completely predictable after about twenty minutes (minor twist at the end, that’s about it), crappy acting (the priest, most of the Hmong), awful dialogue.
I like Clint, and am looking forward to renting his WWII movies soon, but he’s too enamoured of the sound of his own voice. He’s playing this bitter, standoffish Korean War vet who just wants to be left alone. And suddenly he spends most of the movie telling too much to anyone who wants to hear, even talking to himself when the same stuff could have been gotten across with a look.
Not to mention the fact that his character basically does a complete 180 about a half hour in, with no explanation. Very disappointing movie.

I thought it was horrible. Every line in the movie felt scripted, every scene contrived, and every character stereotypical to make everything fit together.
I can just imagine the movie people sitting around a table: “Yes, sir, I did the research; this is the way Negroes act.” “I hear every Mexican wears a button up flannel with only the top button buttoned. And I believe they use the words ‘essay’ and ‘loco’ a lot.” The only redeeming quality of the movie was the badass-ness of Clint Eastwood.
If I had made this movie, it would have went something like:
Clint Eastwood is a grizzled Korean War vet who just wishes to be left alone.
Clint Eastwood does some badass shit and says something racist/funny.
Repeat step 2 for 90 minutes.
That shit is so brilliant I’m going to fucking copyright it. Notice how I left out the heartfelt moments, the change of heart, the man-boy love, and any extra bullshit. This new movie is going to be as awesome as every other Clint Eastwood movie that wasn’t the steaming pile of turd, Gran Torino.
I just came back from it. I thought it was decent, one of the better movies I have seen lately.
I was born in raised in Detroit and I although the neighborhoods looked authentic, some things just didn’t fit. Last numbers I have seen, Detroit was 84% black.
There were 3 black guys I saw in the movie (the three thugs harassing the girl). I didn’t notice any others, not characters in the plot or in the background. It was as if they went out of their way. Also, I was never aware of any Hmong populations in the city. This doesn’t give or take anything to the film, just an observation.
Did anybody else think that there was a lot of similarities to Million Dollar Babies? Eastwood played almost an identical character. A grizzled old with an estranged family, an inner struggle with the church playing a background, and a main character he is first turned off to then warms up to.
Hell, I am not complaining, it is a great character and he plays it well, and an old man I wouldn’t mind being like some day.

While I feel many of your posts regarding the geo-political climate are spot on and highly accurate, this critique of Dear old Clint’s movie unfortunately doesn’t fall into that category. Rather it’s akin to missing the broad side of a barn in terms of accuracy my friend. The gall, I say, the gall!
Kidding my friend, kidding, as I realize different strokes for different folks, but I must add saw it and loved it. Classic Eastwood.
