Got Asked "Excuse Me Sir, Do You Lift Weights?"

My favorite comment from pencil necked “men”
“Don’t you think you arms are big enough?”
They will be big enough when they stop growing.

Another one of my favorites born of ignorance and a fear of hard work
“Creatine is a steroid”

I think most of you know what I do for a living, but I’m a professor in a school of medicine with expertise in statistical analysis of clinical trials.

I once had someone (a physician) that I’d never met come to my office and think he had been directed to the wrong place. When I asked who who was looking for and revealed that I was, in fact, the statistician that he was meeting with that day, he said that I was the biggest statistician he’d ever seen.

Please tell me you told him you were an outlier

they should call it Satan’s analysis! I HATED stats in grad school and got my required B only by the grace of the prof.

I feel deeply self conscious wearing tanks at places like Walmart. Very few fit people in there to begin with much less a 54 year old.

Happens to me as well. I’m 6’4 240 lbs and when my wife manages to threaten/cajole me into wearing a suit I look presentable, albeit somewhat resembling a hired goon.

Otherwise, I dress like a contractor - T-shirt, jeans/cargo pants, baseball cap. When business partners or clients come to my office and meet me for the first time in person, they usually threaten me…with myself, frequently something along the lines of “Does Mr. loppar know you’re rummaging through his stuff”, “I’ll report your attitude to Mr. loppar and you’ll be out of here in a second

I’ve lost count of the number of times people thought that my education level or business position were actually some weird long running joke - “Oh yes, he’s the manager of this company. Ha-ha very funny.”

Seriously? That’s actually pretty intense.

Yes. Based on phone and e-mail communication one usually expects a mild-mannered former academic who effortlessly switches between multiple languages and peppers conversations with obscure historical references only to stumble into an office where this big bearded dude with his feet on the table is insolently chewing a protein bar.

Seems pretty nervey of people. On the plus side, you sound like a pretty cool dude.

Has happened to me on a handful of occasions.

I won’t lie, it leaves a smile on my face for the rest of the day.

Sadly, I did not. Missed opportunity.

This is the answer I get from >99% of people when I discuss my occupation…

I imagined you looked like something like this to him.

So…do you want me to run a linear or a logistic regression through these data points, you puny little bitch?

What can I say? I’m an Aggie :joy:

As I’ve aged, my circle of friends has shrunk. The few people I still interact with have known me for a long time so I don’t get any of the shock and awe type stuff anymore. Also, I don’t look impressive with my shirt on (sadly). I suspect I just look thin to people.

It’s strange that people would consider me big at a soft 240 but don’t think much of me at a lean 210.

I’m going to a pool party with a mixed crowd this weekend. Fingers crossed that someone notices that I lift. Wait, I’m five weeks post-op from shoulder surgery and my right arm looks like a spaghetti noodle. Maybe next year.

I definitely lost size post surgery and during PT. Its finally starting to come back. We too have been invited to a pool party this weekend. Should be interesting, most of the men my age will look like blobs of fat.

The worst part is that I won’t be able to participate in the game of grown ass man basketball in the pool. We played 4 on 4 last year and I’m a monster compared to everyone else in terms of muscle, but mostly height. I could jump and throw the ball downward for a shot.

It’s juvenile, but I still enjoy it.

This is likely because statistics is barely mathematics…
