I thought memento mori was ‘remember to die’
Remember thou art Mortal, Remember death, Remember your mortality etc etc. Same point.
The context I got it from was the Roman Triumph. Basically a victorious general would get a parade through the city with all his booty, soldiers and POWs in front of him. On his chariot a slave would hold a crown over his head and repeat Memento Mori over and over again.
2 ways to look at it in my mind. 1 stay grounded regardless of your achievements because you’re a dead man regardless. Or 2 your going to die one day so you’ve only got so much time to achieve everything you seek.

There was a Nam vet who told this story: his group was out in the bush on patrol, they set up camp for the night, and start eh watch rotation. He takes his turn early in the morning, like 3-4ish. It’s dark(of course), there’s a low fog on everything, kind of spooky looking. then he’s looking around, and turns back to his front and about 10 yards in front of him is a man. He starts to raise his rifle, then realizes dude is dressed like a Roman legionaire, sword and everything. The two stare at each other for a few seconds, then the Roman says, ‘Memento mori’. The guy glances around to see if anyone else is awake, looks back and the Roman is gone.
His thought, and the guy he told it to who put it in the book, was the guy was a ghost(obviously) and was telling him to remember to die when it was time. There is the story of the lost Legion who got cut off in Asia, and was never heard form again. There have been stories of them appearing in different places throughout Southern/Southeast asia in different bits of lore.
PS- guy I work with has ‘I survived abortion’. Another one I saw on a soldier was a dotted line around his neck, with ‘cut here to remove head’ ont he front of his neck.
I’m not sure if I would trust anyone to give me a quote written in Latin or any other language that I wasn’t proficient in.
OP - follow everyone’s advice, you’re really young to get a tattoo, maybe wait a bit until you’re really sure on something which is important to you and you’re absolutely certain you can tolerate for the rest of your life.
I’m late i know, but i agree on the waiting part. I got my first one when i was 19 and it was some stupid sun i picked off of the wall. I didn’t get my next tat until 9 years later and it wasn’t like something i had thought out for a long time. I just hit me all of the sudden while i was listening to this song. The tat turned out great and has great meaning to me.
On the other hand, i’m in the process of getting the sun covered up on my arm. I admit i was young and stupid when i got that.

No don’t get that…my grandpa got some SlipKnot lyrics tatttoed on his arm after the war and his buddies gave him no end of shit for it for years and years.
No those are very rare lol. I have Aztec (there was 3 main tribes) blood running through me though. I’m considered a mestizo, so a mix of indigenous and European Spanish ancestry that started in the 16th century.
