I won’t say much, other than I completely disagree with your definition of intelligence. Intelligence is the ability to do complex things with your head. Problem solving, visualisation, imagination… I put all these things under the heading “Intelligence”.
Being one of the 100 richest people I put under the heading “wealthy”.
Why anyone would associate riches with smarts is beyond me. I think it’s a very American thing. Most people who get fabulously wealthy use the age old combination of greed and luck. I can’t see why this doesn’t make sense. Those in the quest for cash get rich (normally at the expense of their happiness and health). Those in the quest for knowledge get smart.
What about goal achieving? The goal of most academics is TO BE AN ACADEMIC! Seems like they’re pretty successful to me. And they do a hell of a lot less damage to themselves and everyone else along the way than those in search of El Dorado…[/quote]
Congratulations, you can disagree with me. You are wrong, but you are still entitled to your opinion. I guess there is a correlation between understanding what I am talking about and the density of your reply.
So if you cannot do complex things in your head like problem solve, visualise, and imagine, you are not intelligent? Well, I am not sure how many businessmen you have met, but I have met a few and you do not become a successful businessmen unless you can solve problems before or when they arise, visualise future markets or needs, and imagine how you go about doing that. Yes, businessmen may not know a great deal besides what they do, that is called specialized knowledge or intelligence. I do not have a great deal of general intelligence, however I do understand policy and economics. That is what drives me, and just because I do not remember what the Dhali Lama is, or when the light bulb was invented, or how many soldiers were sent to the American Revolution by the British does not mean I am not intelligent. I have a Rolodex on my desk and a Library card, if there is not someone I can call on for an answer, I have the Librarians phone number to wrangle me some books on the subject.
I am sure none of those 100 people problem solved, visualised, or imagined anything as complex as their business.
Greed and luck, well obviously we must be dealing with pirates in your world, because last time I checked people have to voluntarily do business with people, after all this is not the Third Reich.
I have money, I did not expense my happiness or health for it. Just because someone has a drive to know how to do a certain thing, and bring a service to others does not mean they are unhappy or unhealthy. So it takes no knowledge to make money, so we are in a caste system, you Sir are a genius. I always thought it did.
That is fine, they have specialized in general knowledge. The only thing worth its weight in salt in academia is teaching people how to acquire knowledge they want, but anyone with half a brain could figure that out. Meet people, carry a library card, and read stuff that deals with your field. Besides teaching other people how to obtain general knowledge, being in academia (most of the time) is usually worthless as they know a little about a lot, I guess they could on Jeopardy.
I do not speak Spanish, so I won’t assume I know what El Dorado is.
I am sorry, how do jack of all trades do ‘a hell of a lot less damage?’ I think they do now a days, they teach people general knowledge, then these people assume they know everything but they do not even know how to acquire a lot of knowledge about something.
