Good advice Jboogie.

Opener,
It seems a poor choice for your teacher to show that film, but it also seems a poor choice for you to be so offended that you leave the class, cuss and dont come back that day. There could have been better ways to deal with the situation.

Your professor may have brought up points about the film afterward, assigned homework on the film, turned it off after that scene and said “this is bullshit.”

The thing is you don’t know.

I dont agree with homosexuality, but I dont care what people’s preference maybe. I just ask they dont do it in front of me. I personally would not have felt comfortable had heterosexual sex been on the tube in your class, let alone homosexual buggery. I dont want to see a couple at the mall making out and I sure dont want to see two guys making out.

The point is in a clas you should swallow all that and try to gleem some information from it. I assume you attend a decent school with decent professors, and decent professors will get some sort of information from the craziest places. I maybe wrong, maybe the professor is a tool. Who knows.

One seperate but related note is that the rise in homosexuality on TV concerns me; queeer eye, reality TV, and Brokeback got awards just for the gayness (INMHO).

Why does it concern me? It makes homosexuality into a fad. Kids may see it as cool. They may get called a fag being picked on and become comfortable with it from TV and condition themselves to be gay. Maybe I am just paranoid.

Also, I think walking out is indeed a weak thing to do - it takes you out of the discussion. In my girlfriend’s marketing lecture there is a block of bearded Muslim guys who walked out when they discussed the Wonderbra. However valid, or invalid their point might be - they disrupt class, leave the discussion (for which they are there in the first place) and (perhaps worst) make themselves look like complete tits. I agree it is annoying when teachers throw in quick hit comments like this, but I thik what the OP is talking about is in a different category. The film is a very long one, takes some great liberties in its presentation of the facts surrounding the era, and really has nothing to do with the point of the class.

That said, I think the better thing to do is to stay in class, bear it, and at the end directly ask the teacher why she feels it necessary to compromise my learning of the history of medicine with her desire to swim in her ideology on my tuition’s nickel.

I understand your frusration. I think that aids can be summed up in this way:

If you (heterosexual or homosexual) engage in sex in which a penis is inserted into your rectum, you have a high risk of getting HIV/AIDS.

If you are an intravenous drug user (heterosexual or homosexual) and share needles with other intravenous drug users you have a high risk of getting HIV/AIDS.

If you do not do either of the above two things, you have a very low risk of getting HIV/AIDS. So low, in fact, that it’s not even worth talking about.

If anyone can offer anything to refute the above…well…it’s either made up or wrong or propaganda (i.e. all of the above). Period.

dude you’re in school. your # 1 priority is to make the the teacher like you and give you the best grade possible. the subject matter is unimportant. every student at every school bitches about weak teachers or courses. it only gets worse in the post college world. alot worse. don’t blow this chance to learn how to deal it. every weak/mediocre proffesor you have to deal with is another opportunity for you to learn how to pick their lock and come out on top. sitting outside in the hall is not coming out on top. suck it up.

What about those with HIV who developed AIDS before the reverse transcriptase inhibitors came out? Their life expectanwy was measured in months, not decades like they are now with current therapy including AZT.

If you test positive for the virus, and the lab doesn’t mix up the sample, you have HIV. The first test tests for your own antibodies, showing you have been exposed/infected and are developing natural, but ineffective, defenses against it. If that’s positive, they do a specific test to find actual viruses in the blood stream for confirmation and determine your viral load.

If you just recently got exposed/infected your body may not have had time to make enough antibodies to show up positive for the first test. So it is possible to test negative when you are really positive, but not the other way around.
