Getting My Butt In(to) Gear

Of yeah, I never realized the crush Court had on me. I’m going to call her Wolverine now since she’s an animal! Or maybe it was the suit, my memory is a little fuzzy.

I’m glad you enjoyed your first time in a suit. It can be a lot of fun.

Nice first session in gear. Out of curiosity what kind of squat suit were you using? Looks as though that sucker bites pretty damn hard! Oh, and what size?

I forgot to as exactly what it was (maybe Court knows), but it was a 36 Titan. It was tight as hell, but it felt fine on. Oh yeah, the 15 minutes to put it on was about right (no exaggeration) and that was with the suit slippers.

It was a lot of fun, hopefully I’ll be back down soon to try it out again.

This was my first bench session since the meet. I missed the one last week due to the flu. It took a while to get back into the groove, but the last couple sets went good.

This took about 1h 30minutes tonight. The front squats just drained me. Then by the time I finished benching I started daydreaming between sets.

Overall, not too bad. I’m hoping the benching goes a little better next week. I’m not used to only benching once a week (other day I’m doing an overhead press instead and DB bench) so I’m a little nervous how it’ll go. We’ll see.

I’m working on refining this upper body accessory day. I like the idea of have a 4th day that doesn’t directly involve one of the 3 powerlifts and it targets a number of areas I’ve moreless ignored, however I wasn’t entirely happy with how it was setup. So I did what I do best… ask someone with more experience! :slight_smile:

So after reading through some logs/discussion threads/ and a series of PMs, I’ve decided to set up my accessory work in the Doggcrap format. Basically it’s warm up sets (as needed) then 1 rest pause (RP) set. The notation below for reps is 12/8/6, which means 12 reps to failure rack weights and take 15-20 deep breaths, 8 more reps to failure, rack and breath then a final 6 reps to failure.

I’ll likely still need to mix things up for accessory work to see which days everything should land on, but I definitely like this method better than banging out 3-4 straight sets.

Also, again based on various people’s logs and “testiminials” in some threads, I decided to give the 5-3-1 template a try for my main movements on my current cycle is completed. However, I decided to switch immediately for this day since this day wasn’t specifically part of my training cycle, it was more of a “missing pieces” day and the main movement was Military Press anyway. So basically I just switched up the set/rep structure.

So here’s how it went…

Tuesday, May 12th

Wave 1
Military Press (Standing)

2x8x65
1x5x95 (65%)
1x5x115 (75%)
1x5x125 (85%) Went for a sixth, but it was a no go.

DC style accessory work

Thoughts about the session.

1- Overhead pressing strength was ridiculously poor. Although I already knew this, I thought I should have had a few more reps on the last set. Oh well, it is what it is, so now I just need to get stronger.

2- I like the overall set up of the DC training for assistance work, I will just need to identify alternate movements for when I stop progressing in a movement and experiment with what bodyparts to target on which days. Overall I like the idea of a lower volume of assistance work completed at in a short duration through the RP technique.

3- I think I’ll have to figure out a different way to load the dumbbell for the pullovers. Even though I double clamped them it started to come loose on the 2nd part of the RP. I also need to work on technique here as it probably wasn’t actual failure, more technique breakdown. it’ll come over time.

Are pullovers like turnovers? Pilsbury?

You never told me what you think of my current rack. When I get my new set up, you’ll have to come over and show me how to use the bands and do turn overs.

Yes, peri-workout nutrition is very important.

Ah yes…well, I did see the photo of the current (and future rack). Let’s just say, the new one looks like quite the step up. :slight_smile: Actually, the current one would be fine. You could easily work around any of its limitations with a bit of creativity.

Wednesday, May 13th

Well tonight was a big disappointment as far as training went. I really haven’t had a good training session since the last meet so tonight I thought I’d get an idea where my squat and deadlift numbers stand.

Back Squat

The new lower bar position feels fine, but it means my pegs on my rack are now too high. I need to get a 1"-2" sheet of wood for inside the rack so I don’t have to shrug the weight out since it means I have to reset my upper back.

That poor set up along with coming forward on my toes (read loss of focus) is why I lost the first attempt at 315.

The second went better but still didn’t feel good. Just didn’t have any power out of the hole. I have a video of this one and I’ll post it later, but the camera battery died shortly after.

On top of this, even though I’ve been eating more I’ve dropped 2lbs (167lbs tonight after dinner) since last week when I supposedly recovered from the stomach flu.

I’m going to stop here before I over-analyze this too much.

Sometimes training is just ass for no particular reason. Don’t dwell on it.

That’s a good idea about throwing a bit of wood in the rack to raise yourself a bit.
