You know what’s strange?
Why anyone would even feel that much of a need to say negative shit about the concept of God at every opportunity.
Because those of us that are people of reason, not faith, are getting tired of nonsense and are starting to call it out when we see it. Nonsense is nonsense, even if it falls under the umbrella of religion. If I believe that saying some latin words over my pancakes turns them in to the body of Elvis Presley I am clearly full of shit and should be called on it. But if I believe the exact same thing about some crackers and the body of Jesus I’m a catholic and my beliefs are supposed to be respected? Not anymore. It is 2012 and it is time to leave the fairy tales of our past behind. Nonsense is nonsense.

These skulls were here long before you, and will probably remain long after you are gone. It’s not necessarily nonsense. And the fact that they are getting such exposure should say something more about that.

No, but it gives some credence that there are people of reason who are in fact religious and have faith. Your assumption that people of faith aren’t people of reason is based on a false dichotomy perpetuated by anti-intellectual protestants that faith and reason go against each other.

Unless you are claiming to be more intelligent than every person on the planet who believes in God to such a level as to make their own opinions invalid, you are simply voicing an opinion of non-tolerance. No one asked your opinion though…and no one did anything in this thread to instigate getting mocked for their beliefs.
You do that because of lack of respect…but then want someone to respect your own opinion?
I make no such claim about my intelligence, but nice try. Intelligence has nothing to do with it. Some very intelligent people hold beliefs for which there is no evidence (Francis Collins). As far as not asking for my opinion…too bad. See my earlier post about calling out nonsense. Yes, I am suggesting non-tolerance. Not all ideas should be tolerated. yes I do it because of lack of respect. Not everything deserves respect. Grown adults, with a healthy mind, believing things for which there is no evidence should not be respected.

Lol. Yes, making false generalizations of religious and making fun of religious to justify what you believe. Please go on and tell us how you’re a person of reason.
Can you substitute Jesus for Elvis and make a distinction?

Faith and reason do go against each other. They are exact opposites. Faith is belief in something for which there is no evidence. Reason is believing something because there is evidence for it, and not accepting something as true without evidence. There are people of reason who seem to switch it off for some reason when it comes to religion. People make reasonable, logical decisions all week long in their job and family life, then turn it off when it comes to stories about the talking snake and people being swallowed by a big fish. See my earlier comments about calling out nonsense when it is seen.

He is saying that if you substitute “Jesus” for “Elvis” in my pancake story there is no difference. Nonsense is nonsense no matter what name you fill in the blanks with. By the way, I got the pancake analogy from Sam Harris, so credit goes to him.

I’d like to see where you got your definition of faith. Reason is believing something because it is logical, valid, and sound. Matters what you consider evidence, if there is evidence.

4 Billion people would disagree with you. Maybe YOU are the one who is wrong. Why are we supposed to believe your opinion but you can’t belive ours? Even better, just don;t comment on it. No one asked you.
Exactly what I asked.
Like I said, you see this from a large number of atheists and it makes little sense. Something must be there making them feel some need to degrade other people like that. I don’t ever find myself randomly ranting about atheists.

It’s a pertinent question to the conversation. I’ll take the personal plea as a no.

This is called Pascal’s wager, and as it has been around for several hundred years it is quite tired and worn out. First it smacks of dishonesty. You are going to believe something simply because it might pay off for you? Way to go. Secondly, it assumes that this god character won’t know your scheme. You will be able to convince the all knowing, all powerful god that your belief is genuine, not just a safe bet. Right, he/she/it won’t know your true intentions.
